Rough idle

Hi guys. I have a 1996 STI wagon with a cat back exhaust and apart from that its standard. Its done around 130K's and is in mint condition except i have been having a problem with the car starting up for a while now. I have taken it to a mechanics and they charged me $500 but with no result. The problem is when i first start the car when its cold it will idle very very low making a dun----dun----dun sound (haha). If i give it some gas nothing will happen but after say five-ten seconds the autochoke will come on and will sit at normal idle rpm. It only does this when it is cold, no check engine light and i have always used Bp98 and flushed through some injector cleaner everynow and then. Cant think what the problem is and i want to get it sorted because its driving me nuts!

Dirty AFM maybe or a knackered 02 sensor, have you done the connecting wires under the drivers side dash trick to check for fault codes ?

Umm could be. Dont think its the AFM, ive cleaned that a few times with the proper spray. Would the sensor only muck up the idle when its cold? Havnt done the fault code thing yet. Is there a link on how to do that?
