  1. I think if someone wants to steal your car they will, one way or another. A well hidden GPS is good though, that way if they do get your car you can go round and f**k them up.
  2. funny you say that, many years ago when I had my first Subaru, a 91 gt legacy wagon, I caught some guys caseing my car port. I bought a dirty great chain and threded it through the front wheel around the front stut pad locked it to a steel post. That car never went missing though I'm sure it would have if not for the chain.
  3. Forgive me for trolling, but this isn't a new idea. Pioneer for years offered their top end head units with a "dfs" alarm. Basically a high frequency sound as loud as you stereo can go. You can get "scremers" from jaycar as well. Same idea, internally mounted siren to deter f**k wits from stealing your car. Don't know if jaycars ones are 127db though, but they certianlly aren't $1,300 bucks either.
  4. I wouldn't put your email in the open like that, you will get spammed to death. Use the pm function
  5. Fair enough, each to their own. I've owned more than a few Subaru's in my time including a three GTBs. Only one of them ever had the dreaded piston slap. It wasn't even that bad (I've heard much much worse) but the piston and bore were in a very poor shape. It's probably just a testament to the robustness of the ej20 design, that it can function without any loss of performance with such a defect for so long without failing.
  6. I can only wish that one day I will have my very own hoist in my garage.
  7. I lifted one up by myself. I lay under the car and pulled the gearbox up onto my chest, then pushed the bell housing up on my knees and lifted the tail shaft with my hands. It was really painful, but worked.
  8. Did he buy it off a guy that was also selling a Singapore spec sti ;D
  9. [quote name='Hailz said: If its a GTB wouldnt it just be piston slap? Mines done it for whole time I've owned it (30,000kms) and it has'nt gotten any worse that I've noticed, the Subaru company in Chch that service it said "oh they all do it, its normal for these" if the noise goes away when it warm then wont be BEB I would have thought. I wouldn't go so far as to say it is "normal" and not "all" of them do it. A GTB with decent piston slap needs to be driven accordingly (you could probably make the engine fail with a few consecutive redline gear shifts). The writing for an engine with piston slap is on the wall, If it doesn't crack the piston or a ring landing it will blow a head gasket once the cylinder gets out of round enough. If I was you I would start taking my car to a different mechanic and start saving for an inevitable rebuild.
  10. I have a set of front struts and springs out of a v5 wrx. Could probably get them on a truck tomorrow and down to dunners by Friday. Pm me if you want them.
  11. +1 for next year. I organise a social club at work for 70+ people (well that was before the three rounds of redundancies) and it sucks how people whine about things that have taken a lot of personal time to organise. I am happy with the calender and appreciate the hard work it must have taken to organise, especially since the printer must have made a difficult job an absolute pain in the arse. I suggest the name of the printing firm be named and shamed and not used again.

    STi shell

There is a v7 sti motor on trade me in christchurch for 3.3k. its the k's on the clock that put me off. P.s. remind me not to get "reputable tuner" to work on my car
  13. Jack it up and undo all the nuts and bolts attaching the existing gearbox to your WRX. Gently wriggle the gearbox off the motor and into your lap (careful it is very heavy). Repeat process in reverse. ;D

    STi shell

I might go and have a look at this, see what's wrong with it and get an idea what it will go for.
  15. I've got one I will send it to you for free.....Thats only fair cause at this rate you'll probably pay for the whole bloody box.
  16. I hate the clutch start thing. Have thought about disabling it, but it might fool some would-be thief one day so I leave it alone. If you accidently start a car while it is in gear I suggest you walk yourself down to the AA and hand your licence in If you want to add some sort of kill switch I can think of less annoying and more discrete places for it than under the clutch pedal. And better wires to disable than the starter relay (I'm sure a thief knows how to clutch start a car) something like a main power wire to the ecu or something.
  17. Yip, Coby was the muffler to have. Back when a 2" exhaust was massive The exhaust is probably my first memory of a subaru. I remember seeing an RS legacy in about'95 that had a 3" exhaust, that was the moment I decided I had to have one.
  18. Back in the day (in the mighty DX corolla) I would turn the engine off going down a hill, give the throttle a good couple of pumps then flick the ignition back on.....BANG, and a four foot flame out the exhaust. While on the subject of slow drivers. What is with people deciding 80kph is an acceptable speed to travel at on a straight, flat Canterbury plains road? I find these people every time I drive on West Coast Rd.
  19. Yea the 6th gear is helpful on the open road. Bit of a pain in the arse around town though. I wasn't suggesting you should use the engine and gearbox to save the brakes, just that taking your foot off the gas and down shifting before a corner or hill and then applying brakes lightly to adjust speed is a much smoother driving technique than being in a higher than required gear, getting no engine braking and using the brakes only to adjust speed.
  20. There will be others on here who know for sure, but if it's not an STi I think it does.
  21. Many many years ago when my mum taught me to drive in Dunedin (hilly city/town). She started by getting me to drive places on open roads and trying not to use the brakes. down shifting for hills and corners etc. Makes for really smooth driving and reinforces the whole brake on the straight thing. IMO on the road you should always use the engine (accelerator and gears) as a primary means of controlling speed and then brakes when you are out of engine braking power. People who are on and off the brakes make me feel car sick.
  22. mbl8...can u find that in repco or supercheap?? Most mitsi dealerships sell it to the public.......Cause mitsi's are sh!t and use so much of it Repco doesn't sell it AFAIK. And its made by prorama so you might be able to find their wholesaler on the internet (thats how I bought it last time, although its been a few years since I owned a subie with hydraulic lifters)
  23. 01 is face lift and therefore worth a little more. 6k for your car is cheap, no doubt. You will find it hard to replace for that price. I picked the one in my signature up for 6.5k but then I on sold it for 8.5k. So market value I think is between 8 and 9 grand but if you can get another mates rate type deal then you shouldn't have any issues. I reckon you are best off getting it fixed and then sell it. you wouldn't want to keep a car with that sort of history and taking the 6k will make it hard to get into a similar car especially once you take your excess into account.
  24. I still have the bearings out of that same box if you need them.
  25. if it's not the gtb model then it won't have forged pistons and is most likely a lifter (or BEB). Next move is to get some mbl8 and do an oil change.
