  1. A quick online search shows that you can either get custom made hand brake shoes with more friction material or aftermarket rear rotors which use the factory handbrake shoes and suit the brembos.
  2. The soundstream just fits IF you don\'t have electric seat (or put under passengers seat) I went for the 6.5" DD and am building an enclosure into one of the side panels and will be invisible.
  3. And that you would have noticed, would have gone bang and locked up. I\'d be double checking timing and checking for error codes.
  4. Seems odd that it didn\'t go at all, should have still started just sound like crap. Possibly something else causing it not to start also?
  5. As long as it\'s factory equipment there are no issues, i made inquiries with the LTSA before converting, They initially said it wasn\'t legal but when i told them i was using headlights from the same model that came factory equipped the agreed it would be legal as long as it had the entire system including the height adjustment system fitted.
  6. Should be around 10L/12L depending on how you drive it, and of course will use more the harder you push it, i once got one up to 25L/100KM for poor economy start with the basics, plugs, oil and filter, air filter, then check for any errors that could have a negative effect on economy, Try some three bond engine conditioner, it\'s cheap and worth trying. O2 sensors, Knock sensors and coolant temp sensors (the one under the manifold with 2 wires) can also have negative effects on economy if worn. And also check for vacuum leaks, That\'ll kill your ecomony.
  7. Fit airbag bypass resistors to the seat plugs and tuck them under the carpet, no errors and no one will know they are supposed to be there.
  8. Actually both cars run red injectors, green AFM and same ECU. (was a suprise to me too) Just uses the O2 sensor to control fuel delivery
  9. I just put a BG non turbo back on the road, was an EJ20, dropped an EJ25 in the hole running EJ20 Manifold and ecu but economy sucked, had new air filter, plugs, oil and filter change, but still using about 15L per 100km, Ran a can of Three Bond engine conditioner ($15 Partmaster) through it and huge difference, Smoother, quieter, and now down to 9L per 100km. Tail pipe is now nice and clean, running car on 95.
  10. Turbo gearbox is what i\'m about to do with my Non Turbo BH with a dodgy torque converter, In theory the Turbo gearbox and clutch setup will last almost forever being under stressed. You may be able to locate a standard non turbo box but it seems that for every one there is 10 turbo ones for sale, Hopefully it hasn\'t been thrashed though, you may replace the gearbox, clutch, etc just to find issues with the replacement box.
  11. Not always illegal, I have a BH and fitted factory HID lights and wired in height adjuster, Made plug in loom adaptors to change from 3 pin to 4 pin adn just plugged it in. Only illegal if you fit HID bulbs to lights not designed for the light output pattern.
  12. I got a couple of sets of 6000k bulbs off ebay(about $15 A PAIR), whiter than standard and been 6 months now and still working, i converted the car from standard to HID and is one of the best mods i have done so far, Just the manual swap, alloy lower arms, sti seats and bigger brakes to go.
  13. Only issue going wider is rear guards, my ace i went a bit wider (145 r12 to 165 40 r12) when i replaced the tyres and only just cleared by about 2mm
  14. Also a useful note, If the motor is ok buy the belt and bits from either Partmaster or BNT, Here in CHCH they both supply genuine subaru hydraulic tensioners (as the aftermarket ones had issues) at less than trade from Subaru, The waterpumps are the same as genuine and the idlers are also just the same, main difference is a saving of about $200
  15. Try a used belt, Pull it apart and put a used belt on, kick it in the guts and see if it runs as it should, if it does go shopping for new bits, if not find a replacement motor, It\'s not a huge amount of extra work and you will have to pull the radiator and other bits anyway either way. If you were closer i\'d come and do it for you as i have a few used belts here, i\'m sure someone close to you has a belt you can use.
  16. 38mm I brought an adaptor off ebay $5 delivered.

    Engine swap

How about this one? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/subaru/engines/auction-604234263.htm will require a few bits swapping over but would be a cheaper way to get your car on the road.
  18. Smaller, lighter and later model car, It\'s suprising the differences a few years make with fine tuning and better economy
  19. well when it\'s a $1500 car it\'s a complete waste of time and money changing the crank or the entire motor, Even if it was a more expensive car it has to be worth trying, What\'s the worst that will happen? You may have to replace the motor. The one i repaired with welding was sent to me from the subaru dealer because the owner couldn\'t afford the $2500 they wanted to fix the car and they suggested he get me to weld it up to see if it could be saved. As for the loctite, i put it on all crank bolts and any critical bolts that may have the potential to come loose as does every other mechanic that i know.
  20. First thing to do is give the trans a flush and new filter, with the triptronics make sure you use the correct rated fluid as they are very picky and can cause all sorts of nasty issues.
  21. I have repaired a badly damaged one, was a give it a shot, what is there to lose moment, Clamped the key with vice grips, mig welded the bugger in there, then filed a bit to clean it up, put a replacement crank pulley on and loctite the crank bolt (makes it a pain in the ass for the next person to remove but it\'s not going to come loose again)

    Engine swap

That place is pretty good, but that\'s getting up a bit for a bare motor, keep in mind you will need to budget extra for new waterpump, cambelt, tensioners, oil seals, oil, filter, spark plugs. plus possibly inlet and exhaust gaskets, turbo gaskets etc... no need to buy genuine, just go to partmaster or BNT talk nicely and get trade prices. Some gaskets can only be brought genuine though.
  23. 7s are available(and 8s) here is a UK seller, works out about $50nz delivered for a set of 4 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NGK-IRIDIUM-IX-SPARK-PLUG-plugs-BKR7EIX-2667-/230881498082?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35c19c13e2
