  1. I spend $50 or so on Valvoline engine armour and it does the job for a high km car. I've tried the fancier VR-1 'racing' oil and there's no real difference. A good thing to do would check what standards the oil meets, such as API.
  2. I love the name haha. This would be my kind of event, but I am in between jobs now and studying so will have to see you all around next time. Good luck and show the Mitsi boys who's boss.
  3. I have a similar problem and am planning on ditching the oiled pod filter for a non-oiled foam filter in the guard + cleaning AFM and throttle body. Haven't seen a non turbo Impreza air box before so I'm guessing they'd be a restrictive replacement. hmm how much did a replacement cost u?
  4. Your car isn't that old or high mileage.. 5w40 or 10w40 should be sweet. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to run a full synth as it should be better at holding up against the higher temps and also last longer. I don't use sump plug washers, never had an issue with leakage. Never used genuine filters but RYCO filters are good as they're made to OEM spec IIRC. EJ20 generally takes 5L of oil. Changing every 5,000km is a good idea considering the age of your car and also the mileage. I have a 95 GF8 with 230km and do mine every 3,000km with 15w40 Valvoline Engine Armour. Generally speaking consistent oil changes are more important than the kind of oil you use. Having said that, driving a car hard with some crap oil in it makes me nervous.
  5. Last time I was at pickapart a lot of the Subies there were probably in because of BHG and general running into the ground, the rest looked crashed. Found a crack pipe in the back of a BD Legacy too I'm going to put this theory to the test when I clean my throttle body and AFM, I'm gonna fit a CAI with a non-oiled filter!
  6. I've always felt I'd need a tune if I ran a CAI through the guard. Just because the greater amount of air coming in + colder air would surprise the ECU. I've got an Apexi AFC (can't remember specific model but can check) in my car and I'd be out of my depth if changing the intake would require any other changes.
  7. I like the later (v5+?) bumpers bonnet and grille, but I don't mind sticking with the OEM. I would just get factory lips skirts and rear lip.
  8. I think getting an HKS SSQV bov would be a good idea, never tried the abovementioned methods. I like it too but then again it would remind me of a Nissan everytime it goes off
  9. Are STI sways any good? and 2nd hand decent value for money or overinflated go whiteline price?
  10. I wanna get the lip add-ons for my 95 WRX, have considered later version grille and bonnets but all that stuff can wait for when/if I get an impreza coupe and build a widebody replica
  11. I have an WRX SA (STI) too except my code is GF8B5BD, MJ. I'm not sure what the SA is all about but could be linked somehow to later versions known as 'RA'. Only the sedans were known as 'Version 1' for the MY94 year, so I'm pretty sure we can claim Version 1 unofficially. Tommy Kaira made kits for the early WRXs, as they did for Foresters. They were factory options. I'm guessing a complete and good condition Tommy Kaira kit could go for average $$$, as a lot of WRX owners don't like that kind of stuff, plus it is very 90s.
  12. Replace turbo for cheap like for like second hand (first verify that it is in better cond than your current one) See if it fixes problem If no then probably a more expensive issue
  13. I haven't begun yet but I'm trying to become a builder lol Looks like it's a Legacy then. I like first gen as I like older cars, but if I find myself needing more space it'll probably be a 3rd gen or bite the bullet and get a van/ute etc.
  14. A 1st gen Legacy (BC, BF) or a non-turbo Impreza wagon? I'm trying to become a carpentry apprentice. The Impreza wagon probably doesn't have enough room but say if both have the 1.8L or 2.0L naturally aspirated, and fwd, which would be the better vehicle for me? I've researched a little and the Legacy weighs approx 200kg more so would use more gas but shouldn't be an issue if the NA's run fine on 91.
  15. Hey @Subru just go out to somewhere pretty and get your car clean and mess about with the settings on your phone camera (assuming you are shooting with your phone). They want high-res too so that usually means maximum MB and super large photos stored on your PC/file drive. The tints are cool as is imo, thats the Japanese style as front windows are illegal there. Here's mine, car has a ton of mud and dirt on it. I think it could be Speedhunters 'Maximum Attack'
  16. Hey guys I was driving today in the Coromandel in 5th gear up a slight hill when the check engine light came on for 10-20 seconds. It's happened in the past - driving on a country road after an hour or so of continuous driving, slight up hill, nothing really worth shifting down for but light came on anyway. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? (A quick search tells me that it could be knock sensor or AFM) I don't have an OBD2 scanner.. should I get one, and could I even bring up the code if the check engine light has gone?
  17. I can move to Wellington and everyone just park their cars at my house so we all get a fair deal But since space is limited, only Ferraris, Porsches not named Cayenne, Honda NSX, GT-R Skylines, and Subarus can park here Promise I will take care of your cars. Huhuhu
  18. I purchase mine from Alex at mlracing - http://www.mlracing.co.nz/yahoocheatsheet Pretty much JDM (and some euro stuff such as OZ, Borbet) You know you're getting legit stuff and not reps. They're mainly 2nd hand but have a few new sets too. North Shore Toyota supply Work wheels too... but I've never had the $$$ to get those Anecdotal comment on Aden's Tyres - I've heard they're good at what they do, but cater to newer cars = trends so if you run oldschool/'period correct' shop @ mlracing
  19. What about changing a pod-filter hot air intake for a cold air intake placed in the fender, would that necessitate a tune? Can the stock ECU be re-flashed in earlier model WRXs?
  20. 'Winter-proofed' my car, applied rain-x and rain-x fog repellent to windscreen fitted new triton flex wipers new headlight bulbs (Narva H4 Plus 130s) I've done about 4 trips to Tauranga and back (I'm from Auckland) and usually go down on a Friday night after work. Usually, it's very wet/foggy/dark. Tested bulbs in my driveway and they seem OK, I expected similar to what I've had in new cars (I've driven a 2014 Mercedes-Benz C180, 2014 Holden Malibu, and 2016 Toyota Corolla for reference) but then I remembered I don't have HID projectors or bulbs. Duh.
  21. They were small shavings with a couple of bigger lumps.. so I'm guessing synchro debris mainly. It shifts better now, much smoother and I can get into first gear without trouble if I want to. Still has that reverse gear crunch/not getting into gear on occasion but I'm guessing that's worn synchros. Needs a short shift kit though! I'll grab another 2.5l bottle of the stuff and chuck a litre in my rear diff then.
  22. Bit of a late post but I've done an oil change and gearbox oil change on Sunday. Oil changes are sweet as on this car (a 95 Impreza WRX) no worries about having to battle an oil filter that won't come off lol But it was my first time doing gearbox oil and that was initially a mish to find the 21mm plug, removing RF wheel makes it easier though I was shitting myself cos biggest socket I have is 3/4" and 20mm, to my surprise the plug just came off by hand LOL. There was maybe 1/2 a teaspoon of metal shavings on my plug though. Currently running around with 2.5l of penrite 75/90 gl-5 rated stuff, I think I should buy another 2.5l bottle and top it up and also do the rear diff... thoughts?
  23. I wouldn't get it Doesn't look like it would be fun to drive What's up with the rear bumper air vents though, bet they aren't even functional.
  24. hey guys, today while going for a drive I heard a tinny rattling sound so decided to pull over and inspect. Turns out my exhaust tip (which before leaving for this trip was amusingly able to be pushed from side to side) was hanging out of my muffler. Is it as simple as being welded back on, and if I don't get round to doing it ASAP, is it illegal to drive round without the tip? Haha there's a bit more drone but shouldn't put me over the db limit right?
