Bugeye 20k buying advice.

Hi all,

I'm currently looking at buying a 20K for the missus, auto unfortunately, so far i have only managed to find one locally to test drive, and it was all in all fairly good, however there was a noise that seemed to be related to the turbo. The noise is hard to describe, i wouldn't equate it to being a 'normal' turbo whine or whistle, it was more like the diff whine you expect in a baggy old dunnydore or similar, but seemed to have more relation to the engine speed and load than to the actual road speed of the car, hence why i'm thinking it could be turbo.. Are there any known weakness to look out for with the turbo's on these? It is possible that what i heard was related to the transmission, again not being familiar with the cars i don't know of any inherent issues myself, but from google research it sounds like they are naturally a noisy transmission in comparison to other manufacturers.

Any input much appreciated.

i knowa mate who has a auto 2ok and its a mint one as in never mises a beat and runs really well etc.. being a lower power unit they are not as stressed as the sti etc yet have some decent parts in them

not too familiar with the autos but thoes cars run a TD04L turbo and are pretty tough, havent seen many of the the later stright snout (like yrs) fail if any. Still a possibility tho but in my experence doubt it. Ive had ones with loose top mount y pipe bolts and hose clamps make funny noises on boost! does it do it when NOT giving it abit of boot just crusing and very light acceleration?

building on what marc said - does it have a aftermarket bov as they can whine if not sealed properly on the intercooler - a mates b4 had that issue till we tightened the bov and wallah all good

Take it to Maclennans and pay them to check it out! It'll save you money in the long run.

Dont trust a AA or VTNZ report, they're pretty rough in welli

It seems to be related to engine load, ie is not there when cruising light throttle, but as soon as you roll into throttle its there, going to have an other look this weekend so i'll pay it a bit more attention.

No Aftermarket anything, it's stock standard, but still a valid point to look for leaks.

I may yet do similar, not sure if it will be maclennans though i will never bother with an AA or vtnz check again, after the last check i had done.

generally they are really good i wud say.. just a full service inc gbox oil etc and u wud be sorted for a while to go
