Whats wrong with my 95 Gt wagon -power steering

Was driving and the steering went hard on and off. Then electrical smelling smoke came out under the drivers side dash and steering light came on on the dash. I stopped left it for a few hours but have since driven it home with no smoke and no power steering. What should we be looking for. Any ideas. It has power steering fluid and the belt is still there and turning.

Sounds like your power steer ECU had done a big pooh

Located on the side of the steering column above the brake pedal

Remove it and see if it has that burnt smell to it

Thanks for your quick reply. We have pulled out a silver box about 15 x 9 x 3cm with 3 plugs in one side and some codes on it:

MU

31711 AD062

A64-000 DPO 5112

Is this the thing you are talking about? Can't really smell anything bad electrical on it.

Was it bolted to column?

That sounds like you have removed AT ECU

Opps -haha now we've found the smelly one. So what next? Will any Leg wagon power steering ECU bolt on, or only certain models? Does anyone have one, we are P.Nth?

Ichiban are there typical worn/shorted wires they can look for somewhere before plugging a new unit in? wouldn't be pleasant to pop another one due to a related wiring fault

I'll check in here again before we fit one. We know nothing about Subarus. We play around with 4WDs but have been scared to touch the Subaru. Moneys tight so I came online to try and figure out our problem and found this site full of fantastic info. Good stuff.

Probably the only wires that can cause an issue are the two that go into the rack

Check to see if you R/F axle inner joint boot isn't split (these can split and thrash the wiring till the wires break)

Apart from that no major issues with steering ECU's
