nah man STP engine flush (in a red bottle) works really well have used it in alot of cars ive owned..cleanes the inside up like brand new plus it keeps your new oil gold for aaages...if it is your lifters making noise the engine flush will normally unblock the ports on the hydraulic lifters and get all the gunk out...if your engine has lifters that is ???

use a screw driver (a pretty long one) and stick it on the actual cylinder head it self and tell us if u can hear the exact noise through the screw driver... also place the screw driver in different spots ie alternator,cambelt cover in various places etc etc...screw driver works like a stethoscope

Well the stethoscope idea will let you know if its whats making the noise . . Do you know when cam belt was done ?

I think around 200k, and car has done 225k

Aw true . Maybe they only changed the cam belt and not the bearings ?

My car was making a similar sound i thought it was BEB it was the cambelt tensior. Someone put a non OEM tensior which shat itself. It done around 12 000km

my guess is water pump, loads of people do a cam belt without changing the waterpump.

Yea i guess that would keep the cost down a bit. Not too much of an issue now, may be doing a wrx conversion in the next while otherwise ill look at replacing waterpump and bearings to see if it helps

The question is "how long before you expect to maybe do the WRX conversion?" If not long then don't spend too much on it and bring forward the conversion, if possible. Go on commit to it, do it.

If the cam seals aren't leaking & tensioner still good then possibly just do water pump and belt.

Has it got worse? ... didn't sound all that bad last time at Denny's.

Na sound has changed but not really worse. And hopefully not too long!! I'll explain my cunning plan at the meet tomorrow night haha
