How to keep air vent shut Forester???

Hey guys, I just bought my first Forester. 2002 Cross Sports XT. Very happy with it apart from one thing. You know that botton you press to shut the air vents so the air from outside doesn't come in? When I'm using the air conditioning I want it shut right, so I press it and the vents close. cool. Now, I want to turn off the aircon so i press the 'Off' botton to turn off the aircon then what happens is the vents automatically open.

So everytime I turn off the aircon the vents open so I have to manually close them again everytime I turn off the aircon. Am I missing something here?

I want the vents to permanently shut! Help please

Are you meaning the climate control thing rather than the physical vent? I have to press the recirc button each time I turn mine off or it auto draws from outside

why would you want the air on recirc, No really it makes the air in side the cabin overly moist which makes the aircon work harder than if it was taking in fresh outside air.

Sometimes we don't like sitting behind large trucks that pour out diesel smoke straight into our cars ...

*We are borg - exactly what reaperblitz said. exhaust gases come in and also more dust. I want to keep the inside of the car fresh and clean . I open the windows every now and then to refresh the air and I get the air conditioning system sanitized every now and then to keep everything fresh and clean

Dust should technically be caught in the filter? But smoke/gas smell and fumes do come thru. I'm not sure if it's a Subaru thing or specific cars etc.
