Subaru GL bargain

So guys. I've been a long time viewer of this site and finnaly registered and made my account.

I have an idea and wanted some advice on what you guys think, whether im nuts or I have a good idea.

Previously I have owned a few gtb wagons and the odd sedan but hqve never had and always wanted a wrx.

I have just brought (off a friend) a 1998 subaru gl impreza hatch for $200 which I have fixed up for next to nothing and have it running awesome. But I have been pondering on the idea of slowly building it into a wrx. Im wanting to buildsomething that I can say I have donedobeing a 5 minute drive from pickapart and working round the corner from a subaru wrecker I feel as though parts could be easy to come by.

This would be a budget build and not have any completion date as I want and enjoy something to tinker on, as well as waiting for the right parts to come avaliable at good prices.

Please let me know if you guys think im nuts or not

Can of worms and almost everyone on here is going to tell you just get a wrx. but if you want to; go for it. it's your money hole.

Probably the best way as far as wiring is considered is to go aftermarket ecu etc straight from the get go.

Half the builds you see on here start with a WRX, then replace / upgrade most of the suspension, the driveline, rebuild the motor for kicks (or when it does the inevitable BEB) and ditch the factory ecu anyway, negating the whole "start with a wrx" aspect

I say go for it, not any different to building up a 4wd mirage from an auto n/a, or a non chuurbro skyline etc, and considering the base car is effectively free you have nothing to lose

The bits all bolt in, if you get what you need cheap enough then you'll end up with a cut price wrx

Best solution is finding a crashed or dereg wrx (or forester? or to a point legacy?), and transfer over as much as you can from it, will be the much simpler method compared with doing it bit-by-bit which will add up if you aren't patient

Dacerx has just completed a similar project,his was a reshell, He started with a bent RA, brought a retna transferred all parts across, certed and now he has a retna sti coupe.

Just remember that how ever much time and effort you put into it, it will probably only be worth the $500 you brought the impreza for as it will always come up on carjam as a gl
