BG5 steering rack play

Hi guys,

I'm helping a work mate with a BG5 wagon that's he's just bought, it's failed a warrant and the warrant inspector has written "remove play L/H steering rack". I've only had access to the car today so I bought a rack end before actually looking at it but it doesn't seem to be the rack end or the tie rod end as neither of them have in & out movement. With the steering wheel wound all the way left so the rack is sticking out all the way from the housing there is some up and down movement in the rack shaft itself, is this normal?

I can't get anything onto the adjustment nut on the rack to loosen it off and I really don't want to pull the rack out.

Could be the rack mount bushes it's failed on. With the car on the ground idling and get someone to turn the wheels left to right and see if you can see the whole rack moving sideways
