weird smell coming from engine bay

sup guys.

werid smell coming from engine smells like melting plastic?. Another things theres like a dip stick sorta thing on the right side of the turbo just wanna know what it is for theres no oil in there. well there is but its on low lol. please help thanks

The dipstick your referring too is the Gearbox dipstick to indicate transmission fluid levels.

If your getting a real 'hot' kind of smell, this is often an indication of leaking rocker cover gaskets/oil burning up on the exhaust. Check to see if your car is leaking oil and/or look for smoke indicating oil burning up on the exhaust after a good drive.

Plastic burning smell? Check for any electrical problems - blown fuses, breakers etc Make sure all wires running near the turbos are heat-wrapped / protected and not touching any hot surfaces. Have seen part of a loom on a Silivia melted because it was touching a hot surface on the engine/turbo heat-shield.

Mines the king of hot smells

Pees ATF onto the one catalytic converter, CV grease onto the other and gearbox oil onto the 3rd. All kinds of funky smells once youve given it the beans and some nice smoke signals too ;D

However none of those fluids really smell plasticy. Can you identify what area of the engine bay the smell is coming from?

nah aye. smells like its coming from the turbo but i dont know checked everything. still looking thou im scared to drive it haha and when i do drive it i nana it around lol. i get the engine light flicker on and off while its cold then it just goes away when car warms up. its due for its 100k service thou. which im losing sleep over lol beacause of the money factor hahah.

make sure the dipstick is in all the way,my forester has one for the manual gear box and it has to be pushed down to seal the top of the stick.

if its leaking coolant on to the heat sheild it will smell of plastic ,did that when i changed my turbo

yeah i had a radiator hose burst on me lol that is the smell of evil. but its a different smell. hmmm hope turbo aint gonna blow up hahaha

ok found out what the smell was its grease on my manifold or something not to sure but know what the smell is now

CV grease. You'll have a split RF inner CV boot, and its throwing grease onto the back of the uppipe, underside of the turbo and the front of the downpipe.

You'll need to go to a shop then.

I wouldn't leave it too long. If you get water and grit in there it will wear the joint out.

Parts are cheap, but it's pretty involved if you've not done a CV before. Other than that it's straight forward.
