testing a coil

is there anyway of doing this with a multimeter?

have real weak spark in the leone and am trying to determine the cause...

You can check the resistance of the primary winding, by putting the probes across the +ve and -ve terminals, will have to consult a manual to see what resistance you should see

Also you can check the secondary winding by putting one probe in where the HT lead goes in and the other on the +ve terminal, once again resistance should be in a manual

I will see what I can dig up for ranges for you

Also do you have a ballast resistor in there? Maybe its possible someone has put in a coil that doesnt require a ballast resistor and if youve already got a ballast resistor in there youll be getting a very weak spark

Ok primary winding should be 0.4 - 0.6 Ohms, Secondary winding should be 5000 - 7200 Ohms.

Let me know what you get, and make sure youve removed the coil from the car when doing this as having leads still attached can alter your resistances

I think that they are a resistor coil as well (runs on about 9v thru a resistor except when cranking when it gets full volts )

Last coil i brought through repco was $80... Which shape L series do you have? I know my one didnt have the resistor, but I beleive the earlier ones did.

Also, if you do have the reisitor, chuck the multimeter across that while your at it, the resistor will have written on it what the resistance is

ok no resistor, and coil was fine put new points in and were away...hasnt been running since 2002...

I seem to remeber up there some where that I doubt it was the coil

do you know where the fuel pump is located....is it an in tank one? i know i can look myslef but car is in long grass atm

either no gas or no wiring to pump......worked wonders pouring a little bit of gas down the carb....

External mounted on rear subframe just in front of tank

is there fuel in tank

Thanks - and if there is petrol in it I'd say it'l be stale...but we will see what happens when i connect all the lines and get some power to the pump,
