  1. So my gc8 has a moderate amount of smoke coming from beneath the turbo heat shield. It starts smoking 3-4 mins after starting the engine. Turbo is a vf29 I initially thought it was oil burning on the uppipe from the leaking drivers side cam cover gasket. I replaced this and it is no longer leaking but the smoke continues. I have done maybe 100kms since replacing the cam cover gasket. The car still drives and boosts normally with no strange noises. I removed the turbo and replaced the oil drain hose, coolant drain hose and both exhaust gaskets. The turbo impeller has no side to side play and is not contacting the housing on the compressor or exhaust side. This did not fix the issue. The front right cv boot is still intact. Could this be the turbo's seal on only the exhaust side of the turbo? I checked the intercooler while it was off and there was not much oil in there. Just the very small amount that is normal. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am now at bit of a loss. At this stage all I can think of is just driving it some more to see if it is just residue burning off. The amount of smoke makes me think it would be something more than residue though.
  2. Perhaps if people in the south think cars sell for less in the north and people in the north think cars sell for less in the south then neither of them are right haha. A case of "the grass is always greener on the other side."
  3. I'm a big advocate for those rain-x products, definitely worth the buy imo. Can beat windows that barely fog up and never needing you wipers because all the water just beads off the windscreen over the roof.
  4. Living in the south I have definitely seen some of this. Usually the market difference isn't much ($500-1000) but as a general trend I would say that still holds within the $1-10k range. I feel like this mostly happens with cars that are much tidier and people want top dollar for them $12k+. Not saying it holds, this is from purely anecdotal evidence. An example that springs to mind is that Bradley Patterson guy's (I think that is his name) v6 sti that has been rebuilt with a v7 sti block. I keep seeing it on the Subaru pages and it seems to never sell. He wants top dollar for it and I guess there just aren't as many people down here looking for expensive, sorted cars. Everyone just wants a cheap rex to thrash for 6months then sell it on. /opinion
  5. No synchro on reverse. If you are moving at all or have only just depressed the clutch it will/may crunch (even after you have depressed the clutch things are still briefly spinning in the gearbox under their own momentum). It shouldn't crunch if you are stationary and you wait ~1 second after depressing the clutch before selecting reverse. The not getting into gear thing is just the fact that sometimes the gears are not lined up correctly and there is no synchro, completely normal.
  6. Is avcs the main reason for the earlier spool or is it something a little more complicated?
  7. I saw this yesterday, I was struggling to understand his logic. Spent the whole time with a expression on my face.

Nice job guys! I love that this is rolling again, it gets some friendly competition going.
  9. Wow... His reaction to that exhaust was pretty funny.
  10. Don't worry I was only joking about the grinding. I understood what you meant.
  11. Let the clutch out then keep applying pressure until the grinding stops, I understand. I'll try it tomorrow.
  12. How do you re-bed a synchro? I've never heard of this.

If anyone is thinking about a weekend drive and wants to grab this, I left a big clue in the background of this pic... Also this piece of graffiti can actually be seen from the google maps satellite. Extra hint click the "3D" button in the bottom right of google maps. I'm sure someone can find it and continue the game
  14. We really need an @Conducks legal and warranty advice thread.
  15. They are a much more useful tool in most cases but when a CV is seized into a hub I much prefer a copper hammer. Maybe you have the swing of a lumberjack but I can't get the same amount of force behind a rubber mallet as a copper one. Plastic hammer is sweet for 99% of uses but copper hammer is awesome for getting CVs out of hubs. Sometimes you get lucky and the CV just pops right out, then it doesn't really matter.
  16. A brass or copper hammer is ideal because you can put a heap of effort into the swing with minimal risk of mushrooming the axle. Not a tool that is required too often though so it is hard to justify the purchase. I usually put a little antisieze on the splines before I put them back into the hub to prevent issues down the road.
  17. Found the relevant link: http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.php/Knowledge/KnockingNewageRearStruts
  18. Pretty sure @Kiwi_Fozze will have an answer for you. Something like the grease in the struts is old and you need to pull apart and re-grease them. IIRC it isn't a major issue, just the obvious noise is annoying.
  19. Good to know. 225/40R16 is that on a 16*7 rim?

  21. Does it look normal enough? Or do they look too big? I was having trouble tagging yesterday, I just had to backspace my whole comment and start again then it worked.
  22. So my gc8 has some crap wheels on it and I picked up a set of gold 16*7 speedlines for it but I need to get some fresh rubber. Obviously 205/50R16 is the stock size on the 6.5inch rim. Has anyone run a 215/50R16? I'm not sure if it will look more normal on the 7inch wide rim or if it will look like I'm rolling on balloons. The speedo is currently wildly optimistic so I'm not to worried about the slight change in rolling circumference.
  23. My jdm wagon has sliders front and rear. I'm fairly sure that is the difference with 20k vs wrx
  24. Did they sell an NZDM sti wagon? I assumed it was a jdm only thing. I've only ever seen jdm ones.
  25. I know, that why I was telling Raydeo that the title still says Saturday, when the event is actually on Sunday. He would be able to change it. Maybe I wasn't clear
