  1. That is odd. Version 7 WRX struts bolt straight into Foresters and twin turb Legacies, but not gc WRXs? Sorry if I am repeating the thread here, but reading it I feel like I'm trying to follow the ball under the cup as they get switched around =]
  2. The FHI manufacturers plate should have one of these transmission codes methinks (for GC8 w/ DCCD) TY752VB3EA TY752VB5BA TY752VB5CA TY754VB1BA TY754VB1CA And possibly these TY752VB3BA TY752VB3DA TY752VBCCA The four door STi RAs all seem to have GC8, then model year (A,B,C,D,E), then 4DD. There are variations including the Type Rs, the V-Limiteds, and the 22b. Assuming the car hasn't had everything replaced, you should be able to tell what it is just from the FHI plate. Corrections welcome.
  3. That little sump mounted sensor is missing from mine too (replaces sump plug?). Do you reckon there is much of a difference in reading between top and bottom?
  4. A shame the WRX is out of the running based on the gearbox. How about you can't suggest an alternative unless you've owned it =P
  5. So everything suggested thus far is either slower, more expensive, less practical or second hand. Bought the WRX yet? Oh, and don't worry too much about build quality - our Golf GTi had a rattle after only 17,000 kms. I guess it depends what kind of a day the robot was having huh ;]
  6. Last year it was 160 something kilowatts, this year it is 195. Don't take my word for it ... http://www.subaru.co.nz/New_Vehicles/Impreza/WRX/specifications.php
  7. Your WRX will have more power, more torque, about the same weight, four doors into which you can put adults, most probably a better ride, and it will be a Subaru ;]
  8. Oh, you mean no door handles at all, not just locks removed. I see.
  9. Is that because when a random member of the public tries to pull you from your burning car with locked doors, you have rendered the spare set of keys that they had in their pocket for your car useless?
  10. Had an '05 Golf GTi for about six months last year, badly needed an LSD. And I found the DSG to be way too polarised in its action. It was either full noise or Nana. My overall opinion - great build quality, surprisingly quick, frustrating as all hell to drive. Sold it and bought a GC8 =P My opinion is based on the fact that I am biased towards Subarus. New WRX has close to the same output as an STi one generation ago (on paper). You just don't get the expensive engine internals, hard springs, big brakes, and pink bits. Practical everyday medium car you can live with, and has lots of go. The best thing about the new WRX? You can get a sedan! Finally! Get it, get it, get it
  11. Hopai, is the software stand alone (where the catalogue has to be updated), or is it just a client to a distributed database? I suspect if it is the latter, then there is no way to use it without a dealership's access details.
  12. I have an older impreza with no door locks. It gets warrants. You should be fine =]

  14. True, but some combinations seem far hungrier than others. We had an auto bg tt like the one in arsenal's sig a a few years ago, and found it to be especially thirsty around town. I used to hold ours in third to stop it yoyo'ing between third and fifth in traffic. I reckon that saved a noticeable amount of gas.
  15. The average shown on the '05 GTB is 8.6l/100km. That is mostly around town. The lowest I have ever seen it is about 7.8l/100km. It will be slightly skewed by the 1500 odd kms we did at Christmas on the open road. I'm not sure the exact size of the tank in the coupe (40-50 litres?), but I am lucky to get 400km out of a full one.
  16. +1 Get tyres first. Good quality brand new tyres make an unbelieveable difference. Best bang for buck. Loading up bad tyres with stiffer bars might even give you worse grip.
  17. Both of the auto mode ones have the warning "For offroad use only!" Is he just covering his backside in case his system locks you up in a high grip situation and breaks something? http://dccdpro.com/store//catalog/product_info.php?products_id=29 http://dccdpro.com/store//catalog/product_info.php?products_id=31
  18. Great explanation! I wonder what kind of aperture the prodrive solenoid uses that negates the need for the pill. Would it be fixed (ie; it is effectively a pill), or somehow more cleverly regulates?
  19. I had an Omega shape Leone wagon with the Hi/Lo transfer case in it many moons ago. I used to have great fun hitting the gravel valleys out the back of Wakefield and Brightwater in Nelson. Car was very light, 1800 was grunty enough, and low ratio was good for about 65-70 in fifth from memory. Car was a tractor! Hard on the transmission though. A couple of fairly powerful pencil beam spots mounted on top of the bumper made it even more fun at night. Wife had a Brumby when I met her, but I didn't get to drive it much. From memory it drove and felt pretty much like the first gen Leones. Considered getting one before I picked up the coupe.
  20. It isn't linear like that, but yeah it gets big fast. I'm impressed by Hopai getting around the volume of a stock BH legacy with a 3" setup right through! I currently have a 3" cat back which came on the car. Was wondering what to do with the rest. Maybe now I wonder no more =]
  21. What sort of volume would say (for instance) a stock STi Impreza exhaust generate? Just for reference ...
  22. Haha, never lived there. BTW, just watched your youtube collection. Good stuff man =]
  23. I was born in Motueka, my wife in Middlemarch, so we are expat South Islanders. We lived in Auckland for seven years after we left Dunedin, and now live in Wellington. Moving to Wellington was a compromise between available work, and being close to our families (and the mighty South Island!). My take on the cities I've lived in: Auckland: Best cultural diversity in the country (good thing). Most things going on of any city. Entertainment always available. Central City rat race can be very tiring and ultimately soul destroying. Sooo much travelling to get anywhere. West, South, and East Auckland are all great. North Shore is what gives Auckland it's stereotype*. Muggy! Wellington: Home to the best local music of the last decade*. Cheap and speedy access to the South Island. Much more laid back and community orientated than Auckland. The weather is ... alright. Nelson: Best region in the country hands down* - haha Christchurch: Looks pretty. You get Akaroa. Good weather, but the North Westerly is a shocker. In the early to mid nineties this city was easily the most racist, conservative, and physically violent city in the whole country*. No idea about now. Dunedin: Total playground for students, in a good way. Living there gives you Wanaka, Te Anau, Catlins and Central Otago on your doorstep. A New Zealand city with tangible heritage (Maori, Chinese, and European). Gets damn cold, but is often really still - so Wellington on a windy day can feel way colder. Surprisingly hot in the Summer, but not Alex hot. Oh, and South Island roads are infinitely more fun to drive on than North Island roads*. That on its own makes the South Island better =P *IMHO
