yea it's just not Ben registered for 12 momths, not much more though I don't think. What is this exemption. How do I do that, just go to the post office?

If the rego hasn't lapsed by more than 12 months, you can just go to the Post Office and ask to put the rego on hold (min 3 months) and pay the rego that has lapsed.

Then after the 3 month exemption period, you can just pay rego fees again and its registered as per normal.

If you want it earlier than the exemption period, there's another form but I haven't looked into what that one requires you to do.

if its on exemption and you want to register it you have to backdate the rego to the day it was put on exemption.there is a 2 week loophole that you can use (loophole not the right word but cant think of it right now )

ie if you put it on ex for 6months then after 3 months get a wof and want to drive it legally, you would have to pay rego from the day you put it on exemption.

But can I put it on this exemption if it hasn't been registered for 12 months?

It's hard because when I go to VTNZ to talk to someone I just get the receptionist, who doesn't really know and just "makes something up" I'm sure.

I'm reading the NZTA website now, so hopefully I can find out exactly what the go is from there.

This should get you the answers however it can sometimes be luck getting someone who is actually willing to help especially if you were not the last registered owner of the vehicle, when you call have the origianl rego number handy and if in doubt ask for a team leader.

If you have any problems getting direct answers PM me the Rego and VIN and i can do all the relevant chacks for you, and let you know exactly what needs to be done.

oh to answer the Q, if your 100% sure it has the correct rego tag and wasnt put on hold, she will have dereg.

I hate to admit it, but i have spent hours on the phone with the LTNZ call centre, working for a company that complies 60+ cars a month has me on a first name basis with a couple of there call centre reps

hahaa, i have spent hours of work time talking to them trying to figure out ways around situations like this... except all for my own benefit ;D
