Knocking B4

ReubenH

Recommended Posts

Hey. Have been looking at a tiptronic B4 RSK with reported knocking. We initially suspected CV's or Shocks. It has bilsteins.

Went for a little test drive, and yes, i think there may be some knocking from the bilsteins, but that's not it.

The knocking/grinding noise is quite weird, and audible. I only properly heard it when going quick through some left hand corners, And when going into reverse. You come to a stop, stick it in reverse, then when you go back, all you can hear is a clunkinockigigrgdg. I'm suspecting it's an inner front CV maybe?

Anyway i can test to see if it is a CV? Any ideas on what else it may be? I was going to have a look today, but couldn't find my axle stands, so flagged that for today.

Getting to it is going to be fun though. :P

Pity you're not up here. We have driveshafts in presumably good working order, donuts and all, coming out our ears.

Yea, funny you say that. I visited one of the wreckers here in Qt and they have absolutely nothing from a B4. But he's waiting for someone to write theirs off in the area, he said while looking at mine....

Nothin' down there...maaaan there is a GTB in at Pick-a-part at the moment! Pity freight is a killer because the parts are worth nothing.

And LOL here's hoping yours doesn't end up at the wrecker ><;; Dargh.

If there's a possibility of non-killer freight, there's umpteen gazillion options up here in AKL and all of us would be more than happy to make it happen, as Reubs will tell ya :P

Yeah, just waiting on a quote for the driveshaft doughnut thingiemabob from gerald...

I also need to locate my axle stands. I swear i brought them down, they are only vital to do any proper work on me car.... But i can't find em for the life of me. But want to take a look under the car myself and confirm if it is the doughnut, or something else. or multiple things.

Also, DAMN you and your GTB at pick-a-part. >:(

Checked with your folks if they're still up north? They could make for some hilarious aircraft baggage :P

And NYURR NYURR... <3 three pick-a-parts.

Hangar bearing seems correct. This is from gerald

We sell them as a complete shaft, so from that I am guessing that they (hangers) are a major [to replace]. I have searched but can't find any information on swapping them, the only place I haven 't checked are my service manuals because they

are still in storage at the old building. I'll let you know if I do find something(because it WILL bother me). I have sold prop shafts in the past because the hanger rubber sags but that's about it.

The whole shaft's not a biggie, bloody walk in the park actually, i've done several... It's just the price, $170 retail at strong.

And subies have a universal joint in the shaft. Um, woops, no, the one in the middle is a CV, the UJ's are at either end of the shaft.

Now, correct me if i'm wrong, but there's only two types of shaft for subies, Manual and auto right? Or are sedan and wagon different again? I'm pretty sure i've heard it's just auto and manual that counts.

i was going to suggest that but couldn't verify it for sure, id say that all the 1st and 2nd gen ones are the same, but gen 3????

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
