BE/BH Tiptronic gearbox

In the market for B4 RSK. Wanting a manual box but theres a lot of nice ones out there with the tiptronic boxs so may contemplate getting one. Never driven one so would like to get a general idea of what people think of them..

How much freedom do they give?

They were a Gimmic to copy top end race cars

That transmision does give one main problem, slow/no engagement into drive when a pair of seals wear out inside the trans

Repair cost $1200 ish

So they are pretty much a clutchless manual? Having the buttons on the steering wheel seems a bit awkward compared to a paddle shift though. Really need to test drive one..

How common are the problems with the seals? my budget allows me to get one with around 100-120ks on the clock

Nope they are an AUTO, that you can change gears on the wheel, same as moving an auto shifter ! That simple !

RSK B4 at those K's would be a contender for a very close check by some one who know what they are looking at

Trans seals depend on service history (old burnt / dirty fluid wears them out much quicker)

hence no way of telling until they start to fail

Probably just wait for a manual to come along at the right price.. Might have to just go test one just for curiosity's sake anyway

Yes ive used the AA... not going there again in any hurry. My local mechanic is a subaru enthusiast which helps

My GTB got checked there by AA in Palmy - the muppet missed a leaking and dead centre diff...

Thank the the stars (pun intended) for mechanical insurance...

Theyre pretty crap. I test drove an RSK? B4....the shifts werent as smooth as my wagon. It also had the 'rubber band' effect on upshifts which i hate.

The worst of a tiptronic combined with the worst things in an auto. The ONLY time ive seen a tiptronic car impress me is with Mercedes geartronic system (which IS a manual without a clutch) and volvo and others double clutch system.

No matter which way you look at it its still an auto....its hard to do accurate hard shifting on the redline. Still a lot of fun punting around twisties and shifting between 2nd / 3rd holding the gears.

I got one because 80% of the time Im too lazy to change gear :-)

if the aa do a pre purchase check and dont pick up on something they fix it for you for free... when i was at school i bourght a turbo laurel and they said it was a tidy conversion etc etc so i bort it... driving home the ass end is crabing down the road and they replaced the rear subframe and had the chassis straightened for free
