Advice needed for rear speakers

Recommended Posts

I have a very standard sound system with a 50Wx4 rms headunit, 6½" splits at the front, and 6½" rear speakers. After many many (8 actually) years the rear speakers have finally blown their cones apart.

Can someone suggest a quality speaker that will do a fine job?

Either a plug-in 6½" replacement, or a larger speaker with faithful base (doesn't need to be low cut-off - just good quality sound) that will fit the cutout. Cutout is quite a big oval shape. Car is GC8 coupe.

Do you have your heart set on having rear speakers. In my opinion rear speakers are good in theory, but really, you want the best music to come from where you sit, in the front. Are you happy with your fronts? Should you upgrade those first maybe?

If you do want rears, basically any 6 / 6.5" speakers should slot in fine with any mods. The likes of Pioneer, Alpine, Soundstream are good brands to start with, then Fusion, Sony, JVC are a bit of a step down, but fine for rears if you only want it for rear fill, not if you actually want to listen to the music coming out of them.

You don't run a sub do you? If you want a bit more bass, then 6x9's are a good option.

If you want to purchase from a shop, then go see Streetsounds, I get pretty much everything from there these days, and will probably offer a better deal than the Repco/Supercheap type of places.

Quality 6.5" front speakers, 5" or 4" ones for rear fill.

Small amp to run the front speakers and power the backs from the head unit.

Lightweight, SQ is where its at imo.

I use pioneer for all my audio in car.

for rear fill the Response 6" components without the tweeters would be ideal, or if you wanted to use them in the front as components, amped at 75W RMS they actually sounded ok (for cheapies anyway).

what speakers are you running in the front?

the alpine type-r are very nice speakers, rated at 110W rms - they will need a fair amount of power to maximise their full potential, i ran them from a 4-channel amp: bridged front channels for left, bridged rear channels for right.

what headunit you running? 50Wx4 won't be RMS output? it will be more like 16-18W. is it still the factory Alpine 3CD in-dash unit? or did you swap that out?

Thanks guys.

After your comments I listened to the fronts only and found that, by crikey, there was just as much distortion there so I'll replace them 1st.

And yes, I have the factory Alpine 3CD in-dash unit. It's not 50W rms like I thought, hadn't swapped it out. Must of been dreaming.

Will upgrade the fronts first, then rears. Found some 6" speakers in the workshop, which will be 2nd hand so will put them in the rear, and get some new ones for the fronts.

Are the fronts the factory speakers? If they are the factory ones, then they will most certainly be stuffed. The foam surrounds will be falling apart and will crumble in your fingers. Anything will be an upgrade for those haha! But be prepared for a bit of a loss in midbass. The factory speakers (no idea why), are surprisingly good for lower frequency response, but suck for mid and high-end response.

Foam surrounds were the luxury legacy speakers, the more low-end wrx ones were paper cones and surrounds - no expense spared!!

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
