Power steering tries to jerk itself to center when turning

I have a 1999 b4 rsk and the steering is acting up.

I've only just bought the car so I don't know how long its been doing it, but whenever im turning (direction doesn't matter) it softly jerks itself towards center. Also the steering at times feels heavier than others and makes a sound at startup and also has a bit of whine. Tried changing the belt but still does it.

Is it my p/s pump? Had the car at winger today for some work and they were unable to diagnose it ???

Pump or belt is my guess ( make sure belt is tight enough )

grab a mate, pop the bonnet.

get your mate to watch the pulley for the P/S pump.

start the car. turn the steering wheel left and right a few times, get your mate to watch that the pulley isnt stopping while the steering wheel is moving.

if it stops, its buggered, same thing happened to me a couple weeks back.

also check your fluid it could be old and useless.

Funny enough I have the same problem, I bought 1999 gtb about 2 weeks ago and the first thing I noticed was the steering felt funny. the steering felt light sometimes then heavy and when you turn the steering wheel it jerks back to centre. My wrx and forester never did this. I noticed the previous owner had way too much power steering fluid in it so I removed some and also changed fluid, it helped a bit. I had my mechanic check the belt and pump and he said they were all good and this model does have quite a light steering feel.

they have variable assist too

Steering ecu controls this, relative to speed.

This sounds more like a belt issue tho
