2004 GTB Auto wont change from 1st

I have a 2004 GTB legacy with a auto transmission.

Intermittantly when in standard drive (not sports mode) it will stay in 1st gear and wont select 2nd.

uusally if I press the change button on the steering wheel it will change to 2nd and then be ok for the rest of the trip. The problem only occurs when cold.

I have also noticed an intermittent problem where there is a delay between selecting drive and the change to 1st gear (it stays in manual) this usually happens after reversing out of the garage, once again only when cold.

The car has done 86000 km and I assume has never had the trans fluid changed.

Anyone heard of this problem or know of any diagnotic codes that I may be able to check?

PS when the auto works it works great, excellent car to drive

give the trans a birthday for a start.... the pan filter is probably gummed up and not picking up enough oil.....

i had the same problem when my car was auto gace it a mean clean out and worked like new again

yup have the same issues with cars of different makes... Trans fluid change fixed it.

Its very unlikely at the age of the g/b but it can also be dying clutch packs.. They just lose their sqeeze over time.

Have that problem in current familia.. going from reverse to drive.. Also 3->4 when very cold, it just wont select 4th.

Different car but the same underlying issue.

Thus try the fluid change see how you go, if it persists.. new auto box time.
