mods and help for 1998 wrx wag

Hey guys im new here but need assistance so hopefully ive come to the right place!!.

i just bought a wrx 1998 wagon and the mods it has are an hks bov, blitz, nur spec exhaust system and mags. so pretty standard. 92000 on the clock.

now when i boost it in second its quite bumpy as the turbo picks up, any idea why?

cambelt has not been done, im getting that arranged.

now i think it is standard boost as its not outrageously quick.

what mods should i do next if i am looking for performance with reliabilty!!?

cheers guys!

Unfortunately mate, performance and reliability don't go hand in hand, the more you mod engine wise the more chance something will break. ;) Exhaust ie Headers, EBC, Suspension, Brakes, FMIC, and maybe aftermarket ECU/tune will cover most the areas but like anything the more power u run the higher u run the risk of something going wrong.

Secondly espeically if it isn't an STI u are severly limited in how far u can modify the engine wise, ie not going up 16psi etc etc

Hey Hey, Welcome along...

From experience, the best mod's you can do is good maintenance, Of course, the more you modify the car to make it faster, the higher the maintenance costs are going to be. You *can* have performance with reliability, but it will cost your wallet.

Otherwise WRXER pretty much nailed the doable-reasonably-cheap-without-selling-your-firstborns-firstborn-to-the-devil on the head. Factory you should be running between 14.2 to 15.6psi on the factory solenoid, however if you're missing the restrictor out of the Wastegate line you may only be running spring pressure which will make it feel like a slug.

With your cambelt, fork out the extra $$$ and get a full 100K service done, (All Fluids, Trans, Brake, Clutch, Diffs, etc), otherwise farther down the line you will need to get it done anyway, but with increased labor (most mechanics can do more than one thing at once, so the charged time will be substancially less than getting everything done one by one).

As for the turbo boosting in second issues... Without seeing the car it's a bit hard to tell, could be anything from a cracked vac line to a blocked sensor, even a slipping clutch or worn hub in the gearbox!... Is it *only* in second, or just the most noticeable then?

ok thanks wrxer and hopai. who do u reccomend i go and see about these issues whith regards to wastegate etc. will any old mechanic check it out?? and the boosting problem is mainly in second as i only notice it then, sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesnt. as to the factory boost well its no slug but it just dsnt feel like a wrx should, comparing it to my mates wrx 1996 sedan (fact its sedan may have smethin to do with it) my turbo dsnt kick in as hard. i dnt know maybe im just thinking smething is wrong when infact its fine.

chances are you got a td04 as being a wagon unless its a sti

the 96 sadan probably has a TD05H kickes in hard and good strong turbo. up grade to a sti turbo, ecu, yellow injectors (unless u got them already) and depending on the version 4 or 5, the afm to orange sticker ones

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
