Turbo removal from a tt legacy??

Any advice or a how to guide for removing and installing a primary turbo for a BE5 RSK? Primary is a VF31, and is on the early stages of letting go, so i think it needs to be replaced. I want to do it myself but Im unsure of what to do.

Any help, tips and advice will be greatly appreciated

Patience, a big screwdriver/crowbar and you have to take off the TMIC that's where a big screwdriver helps. It's a. P.I.T.A, but it takes about a half dozen to get it done.

undo every thing connected to the inter cooler and undo clamps and things, basically its better to do it when its hot cause the plastic is rather hard and brittle when cold on the ic piping, give the ic a hua of a shaking and wiggle and pull it like theres no tomorrow then it comes off for the turbo take off the primary down pipe lots of wd40 helps on the bolts haha and get out your long extension and a breaker bar for the turbo bolts, turbo comes off fairly easily

Agree did my knock sensor on my be5 today and putting the TMIC back on was a right royal pain.

Patience is key, but I found once the (looking at it from the front) left hand turbo pipe was on give it a good twist and the throttle body piping goes on nice and right hand side goes in.

I would confirm that bad turbo is the correct diagnostic before spending all the effort pulling it out.

Pulling it out is pretty straight forward its the little things like seized nuts that take up lots of time.

Basically remove TMIC and drop the downpipes, drain coolant and remove oil and water lines then pull turbo out. Going back in is a lot more time consuming and having 2 people really helps. The oil return can be a bit of b#tch to get back along with up-pipe bolts and lastly the TMIC. The last time I changed one I unbolted the up-pipe and lifted it out slightly to tighten all three bolts holding it to the turbo the dropped it back down in place as one unit.

I tried removing downpipes to check for shaft play but not really having much luck. I did notice that the TMIC had oil inside it. Can this be a problem?

A bit of oil is normal in the TMIC is normal.

Confirmed today that the primary turbo is on its way out....its now whining really loud when accelerating and its now starting to blow white smoke
