aftermarket headers - which to choose

Guest

Recommended Posts

hi there guys. im looking into getting some aftermarket headers for the RS to go with my new turbo setup. ive noticed redline sell some. ive seen two different styles. i know someone who had one style and can confirm does lose the rumble a tad but sounds like a evo with really aggressive cams. the other i havnt heard anything about.

anyone tried them? need info from experience. also which one flows better?

this is the one ive been told to sound evo ish :-/

I have personally ran da frst set. Yea it does chane your exhaust tone on throttle. The collector does sit real low and has tends to scrape on a low car. I recommend the SSI (tomei copy) headers ( what im running now) even though they are double the price

I bought in the 300 dollar ones looks like those above, never got around to fitting as didn\'t clear my sump.

If you have factory sump you will have no issues if you don\'t make sure it will fit.

I know a few people who use the SSI ones and love them, but make sure you get the ones with the 3 bolt flange on the uppipe, the older 2 bolt ones can warp the flange and have issues with leaking gaskets.

FYI im making 240kw at the wheels on ported factory collectors, but with new crosspipe and uppipe.

If they dont have slip joints between the heads they are more likely to crack earlier, but cheapies tend to have sloppy slipjoints and have leaking issues.

these are the good ones http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/subaru/other/auction-526590081.htm

id recommend the second style, as per the ones in my build thread, they are nearly the same.

sl8r and greg0o0o run the SSI ones which are nearly identical to mine as well, and although a touch less rumbly are very good quality.

Both sets i talk about have the three bolt flange arrangement which as stoffa has pointed out REALLY improves the longevity of the flanges.

also factory headers do support quite a few kw untouched.

I had the top set on my legacy when i did the ST and would agree with the evo statement .. with a 3" exhaust, I was 200kw with them and it was a very loud kw .. best comment I had got was " bro you car sounds sort of like a subie at idle, an evo when you start taking off, and an evo on roids when boosting... (just personal experience) Also they where very torquey .. the back of the car on bilstenz would totally drop, as soon as i went to standard the back stopd dropn..

any chance you got a video of what your car sounds like with them?

main reason im going aftermarket is that my up pipe is already leaking and on the turbo im installing soon ill be running an external wastegate and i want to mount it the wastegate on the up pipe rather than the corner of the headers just before the up pipe as most people do. and hey the extra flow cant hurt right :D

im thinking of getting the second style as there is none of that warping flange possibility.

what are slip joints? are they the welds on the pipe to the flanges?

and i would love to get those ssi ones but budget doesnt stretch that far atm. later on ill upgrade for sure :D

im also expecting the second set to be more rumbly as the lengths look different compared to first style.

my car not too low thank god LOL its very driveable but they both look like they sit in similar positions

you really need to hear my car IRL - and to tell you the truth the sound changes with the muffler and resonators you put on it.

As a generalisation however, MINE is more throbby than factory headers at idle up to about 3000rpm given the very short runners on the drivers side, and similar throb to factory headers when your up from 4k-8000rpm. It sounds ruthless as fook on boost;D it certainly is evo sounding but it obviously doest throb on boost. RexLEggy has a clip of my car going past the front straight at MM12 on facebook somewhere maybe ask him. oh and there is a clip of me doing big donuts in the grass at MM12 that joker has as well.

I have a couple of mp4\'s on my computer as well at an autocross i can send you perhaps - flick me your email.

the SSI headers are slightly LESS throbby at idle than factory, and not quite but close to evo sounding when really raping it. again muffler dependant

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
