Gf6 (93) Impreza - High Idle and bad fuel consumption - HELP pls

Hi All,

I have just bought an Impreza to get me to the snow. Only catch with this one is that it has the following symptoms that I\'m hoping someone has come across before or may be able to offer suggestions...

Car starts and runs fine apart from a strong smell of exhaust fumes as its warming up. If you take it for a drive, it drives fine. When you come to a stop the engine idles at around 2000RPM. Its CHEWING through the gas

I\'m thinking of the following...

Remove and clean IACV

Cleaning out the throttle body with upper engine cleaner (just with the air intake off)

Replace MAF sensor (not too sure how likely its this)

Car doesn\'t have any codes logged. Any help appreciated.

I can only comment and say when the car is \'cold\' it runs slightly rich to get the engine up to temp, it\'s an ECU thing, which would explain the smell. But 2000rpm? I don\'t think it should be that high.

As a quick guess I\'d be looking towards either a MAF problem or air leak

Orrrr the IACV thing is jammed wide open

Does the idle "hunt" or just sit at a steadyish 2000?

Also if your O2 sensor is buggered it will dump in the fuel

Doesn\'t hunt but revs are very high. If the IACV is stuck open I\'m presuming its stuffed and I need a new one...?

How can I tell if the IACV is stuck open. Can you \'open\' it to have a look inside and its obvious or ....?
