Smoke on start up

As above. Only on start up, and the only thing I've done recently is have the tmic off. Have noticed abit of oil around bov flange. Any help appreciated

How much smoke are we talking about? How do you know it doesn't smoke when driving? How often do you need to top the oil up?

Uum, we're talking about a LOT of smoke on start up but nothing whilst driving (that I'm aware of), nothing when she's idling up the drive, nothing after starting (jumped out and checked)and apart from dirty the level seems fine

Does it fill up the street with smoke in the morning or just a big puff?

Does it smoke when you throttle off? While on the driveway with a warmed up motor

try holding the revs at say 5000 rpm for a few seconds... when you take your foot off the gas... does it smoke?

No, just a big puff aye. Application of throttle seems to make no difference, it's only when I start her up and only after she's been left for a bit (overnight when I start it up and when I go to leave work)

I wouldn't worry about it... sounds normal, especially if you are not having to top up the oil a lot.

Worn valve seals? Or seals that are just starting to wear? Sounds like what I had on a previous car, longer it sat the bigger the cloud of smoke, but would disappear once it got a little warm and burnt of the excess oil.

Well it's burning oil somewhere

Sounds like it's in the intake

Either a) one or the other turbos is pushing oil out

or b) the motor is pushing it into the intake

Or c) I don't know but a puff of smoke is not a normal startup condition in a 15 year old car

It's normal for a 15 year old car... obviously it's burning a bit of oil, but if it's not enough to register on the dip stick, it's hardly a problem.

Valve stem seals are probably getting a bit tired... maybe the piston rings too... maybe the bores are going out of round slightly... could be many things.

Thanks for the above guys! I really appreciate it! So today no smoke on start up either first thing this morning or after work so f**k knows lol Will continue to monitor it and maybe chuck a can of upper engine cleaner through her? To add some information to this the engine has only 140k on it. I believe the valve stem seals are worn. Richard Baddock thinks it's also oil in intake but we don't know why. Will continue to monitor and start saving for new motor me thinks
