1996 GTB/BG5 fuel pump issues

Got similar issues to this thread: http://www.clubsub.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic,1477.0.html

Symptoms:

  • Fuel light came on with petrol in the car
  • Car would crank but not start after filling up
  • Car was running poorly/wouldn't boost or if it did it wouldn't over 5psi
  • When the car wouldn't start fuel pump wasn't turning on (wasn't hearing noise)
  • Got the car started by hitting the fuel pump (knocked out of dead spot?) but still doesn't run too well.

Fuel pump seems to be getting power and the connections are clean, so I'm assuming this is going to have to be replaced. I'm just wondering what function the fuel pump relay has in this? Is the relay responsible for turning the pump on? Could this be faulty? I can hear the pump whirr for a few seconds when I turn the key.

I tried having a look in the engine bay and under the dash for it but couldn't find anything - can anyone point me in the right direction? Is there anything else I can check personally before taking it in to get checked out this weekend?

Edit - I found this: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_is_the_Fuel_pump_relay_on_95_subaru_legacy

The fuel pump relay on a 95 Subaru Legacy is located about 10 inches above

the internal fuse box.

The internal fuse box sits on the left side of clutch/brake/gas pedals against the

firewall.

You wont directly see the fuel pump relay, in order to get relay into view you will need to:

-unscrew the fusepanel (this helps moving wiring around as well as open up some space)

This opens up an inch or two of more space for your hand to get into.

Using a flashlight, you will be able to see 3 cyndrical plugs.

The fuel pump relay is the green one. Twist the relay 180 degrees to the right, then pop it off the mount, and finally unplug the green connector.

The relay is silver in color, to test if the relay is failing use a ohm reader. Touch both

connectors 1 and 2.

But I couldn't see the relay :( Could someone confirm if this is the same for this model of Legacy?

Do you mean on top of the fuel pump itself? I'd been told it's common for the white connector to melt or get dodgy but all of the connections are clean and seem fine.

Currently I can start the car probably 95% of the time, but it may sputter and die, or if it does run, when you drive it you sort of get 'bursts' of power (and hitting the pump helps).

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
