Strength of RS gearboxes

Recommended Posts

fellow CS'er might buy my 1990 RS gearbox

They want to know if they are any stronger or weaker than factory BG (TT) 94-96 gearbox's

I suspect they are weaker but they asked me to post as they cant check CS during the day.

Someone who "knows" can you please comment, i can complete my sale or otherwise if i know.

Cheers

Ive broken a BC5 box or three from launching, and I always slip the clutch to some degree when launching so as to reduce shock loading. And I know of people who have broken them just changing through gears under boost (not flat shifting or anything).

I also have a BG5 and I have been raping that for over 3 years and not managed to break the box. Admittedly the cars only putting out 160wkw but I have drag raced it at Masterton and run it round Manfield, abused it at Targa as a safety vehicle, and competed at various sealed and unsealed autocrosses in Wellington. Yet to pop after 60,000km or so of me using it.

So from my experience I would say the BC5 boxes do seem weaker. However you should check the code on the box to make sure its actually a BC5 box, as given what else is on that car it may well have something else in it... Also I think alot of it comes down to how you treat it. If you flat shift or launch alot I would suggest not using an RS box, but then I would suggest if your doing that you want a dog box....

Im not sure what technically is different inside the boxes between BC5 and BG5 boxes, I assume Boostin, Ichi Ban or Koom could probably answer that?

thanks guys.

Its been offered out for $200 to the OP. They can make the decision on what to do.

Thats a very reasonable price, given WRX boxes are generally $400+

yup its reasonably untested (feels ok for the short blat it got). It selects all the gears nicely enough and well i didnt get car for much..

Hence it can go as is and some one wins a gb for 200. Has a 4.111 rear end as well. i can sort a deal for all the bits.

same gearbox internals ( same teeth widths) minor variations in individual gear drive ratios , slightly differnet transfer drive

BC boxes are just older

Awesome, thanks for that much appreciated!

Any idea when the internals actually went to something stronger? As my V3 box for example seems much stronger given it gets alot more abuse and has yet to explode.

Yes. However there has been a slight change of plan. Will be running the current g/b untill it literally explodes THEN changing to whatever ive got by that point.

So time for some limiter side steps off the clutch at MM then? I will bring the video camera and help you swap boxes in the pits....

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
