  1. It is odd that in all the years (15 or so) I've had Subarus (4 of them, 2 turbos), and lots of my friends have had Subarus (mostly all turbo), I had never heard of, or seen a big end bearing go in an EJ20. Come on this forum and every acts like you'll get one just popping the boot and putting your picnic rug in =\
  2. The only difference gearing wise looks like a switch to a higher 5th and 6th at some stage. They appear to all run the same final (3.9). The ones with DCCD come in automatic and manual flavours, but perhaps it is just the controller that differentiates them. There seems to be four combinations of center/front diff; viscous/open, viscous/Suretrac, DCCD/Suretrac, and DCCD/Helical LSD. The splits also changed from 45/55 to 35/65 somewhere along the line, and there are a couple with external transmission coolers which would have to be good for track work. Here is a table reproduced from Cath and Ken's page [table] [tr] [td]Trans. 3. Have a squiz at this: http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/subaru/subaru-obdii-obd2-codes.php Generally speaking I think you should be more concerned about the state of your vehicle than the state of your co2 output when that light comes on ;]
  4. What about the trip computer display from an 05 Legacy? There was a guy on trademe fixing them (must be a common fault) but I can't find him now. Are you in Wellington?
  5. hmm, I thought the Legacy GT set a record for a production station wagon at around 270 ... and with a lot less than 360 horsies.
  6. I don't like chromes on modern Japanese cars either. Unlike old American muscle cars (on which I think they can look good), modern Japanese cars don't tend to have any chrome on them. I reckon wheels look best when they match the car in some way. Chrome all your bumpers, then put chrome wheels on =P Besides, chrome wheels are heavy. From a performance perspective, you are increasing unsprung weight which reduces the effectiveness of your suspension. One of the reasons you would put aftermarket wheels on your car is to reduce unsprung weight. Unless it is a show car, and then I guess you don't really care how it handles.
  7. What size are you talking about BC5? I just got a set of RE001s in 205/50/R16 about two months ago fitted and balanced for about $220 a corner, which matches your price more or less. The RE050As on the Legacy however were $450 or something horrible like that. Oh, and I forgot to say: I replaced Proxes 4 with the RE001s. No contest. The Bridgestones are better in every respect.
  8. Link to reputable article please ...
  9. Unfortunately everyone has decided that they shouldn't have to be horribly maimed or killed to death when they crash their cars into each other. The downside is that cars are bigger, and ACC levies go up to pay for people who by rights should have died in car crashes. The upside is that less people die.

  11. I'm pretty sure he meant just over half a cent. That is; half of one cent per litre.
  12. Maybe you should leave it to your mate to post in this thread then? Would be a lot more useful ...
  13. *waits for BC5RA to turn up* Subaru RA models are usually stripped out Group N rally homologation models. They are usually lighter and forgoe luxuries (which will be binned by a rally team anyway). Of course you can option an RA from the factory, so their specifications are all over the place. I have seen RA expanded as many things, but primarily 'Race Altered' which I think is a little bit of a Japanese <-> English oddity. In reality it is probably not an acronym at all, and any meanings beyond the letters themselves are an afterthought. If by 'impreza engine in it' you mean an EJ20, then I would say yes. But generation one Legacies were rallying before there was such a thing as an Impreza, so it is a bit like saying "I have some of my child's DNA in me"
  14. What do you mean useless?! Those are what provide the lovely Christmas Cracker sound to brighten the day of your neighbourhood car jacker as s/he levers your window open.
  15. The Retna also came with an 1800 and a 2.0, and you could get a four wheel drive. I saw an import for sale not long ago that had an 1800 and the gear stick switchable four wheel drive like that of the NZ new Justy.
  16. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=213587579 <-- if anyone wants them. You have three hours, unless they relist. Having thought about it a bit more though, I guess they would probably be a bad idea handling-wise unless by some miracle the GC8 chassis has the same weight distribution as GDA/B. Doesn't sound like any here has tried them on a coupe.
  17. Time to go shopping: WRC Brakes WRC Steering and Suspension WRC Body Panels WRC Transmissions WRC Electrics WRC Wheels and Tyres WRC Engines, ECUs, and Turbos! Remember to take your winning Lotto ticket in ;]
  18. I know of one place in Auckland wrecking a Type R. Worth a look? Second hand parts for these are starting to get pretty hard to find.
  19. 330 horsies is closer to 250kw ;] I agree, kw sound tougher.
  20. By far the easiest way IMO, and how you can do it in your head almost instantly ... *) If you have the kilowatts, add a third of them to get the horsies *) If you have the horsies, take off a quarter to get the kilowatts It is about as accurate as you can get without a calculator.
  21. Just came across a set of standard V7 shocks and springs for about $300. Claimed to have done around 30,000kms. Would they be much better than standard Version 4 Type R struts? Mine have done 180,000km+, and this seems like a cheap and cheerful refresher if they bolt straight in without a cert. And in fact, just found a set out of an 01 Spec C with a claimed 10,000km on them for less. What do y'all think?
  22. Putting the thicker of two swaybars on the front of a WRX is generally going to promote understeer isn't it? If you 'loosen' the rear end relative to the front, it theoretically has more grip at the back. I would imagine that to be undesirable unless something like lots of toe-in at the rear was already making it super oversteery?
  23. Version 3 Type R vs a DC2 at Tsukuba. Committed outside overtake at turn 6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuQ5DqFGvwA
  24. Don't the guys in the pits for the V8 Supercars change front pads in about a minute or something crazy like that. You just need a set of oven mitts ;]
