Leaking boot door what to do???

Recommended Posts

Hey

The Boot (back door) on my 1999 BH5 Wagon has water dripping out every time I give my car a wash!

Has happened twice now I thought it was just a one off as last time I used a water blaster so I thought I may have forced water accidentally in it making it wet.

But just the other day I washed it with a sponge and a hose and a few hours later open my boot and water drips out from the plastic bit inside!!!

I then opened up the plastic part by removing the plastic screws and found water dripping from 2 of my brake light bulbs which are buggered due to water damage and all in the inside of my boot door their was water!

Any ideas on how the water is getting into the boot (back door)?

Broken rubber seal?

Any answers would be much appreciated! :)

Cheers

That panel across the tailgate that looks like a lamp. Thats the garnish. They often fill with water then it leaks out of the bulb holders when you open the tailgate.

Pull the garnish off, drill a few 2 or 3mm holes in it to drain the water, and refit it. You won't stop water getting in, so just give it holes to drain out of.

There is a whole thread on this where a few of us posted fixes,

Recap: need some stuff to clean the garnish (also tools to take it off), then either windscreen sealant (black stuff), or silicone sealant, or new double sided tape and replace old stuff...

Have fun and search, heres one to help you get started:

a)Take the garnish off,

b) Clean with warm soapy water around the edges (also clean the black rubber thing)

c) Dry out with a hairdryer (use the Mrs one or buy one for $12 froma supermarket, then keep it in your toolkit - dont put the Mrs one in your toolkit, she'll kill you),

d) Windscreen silicone sealant, use plenty of it, run it around where the black thing go's

e)press the black seal/black thing into the sealant,

f) run some more windscreen sealant over the black thingy

g) mount the garnish onto the tailgate and bolt it tight

h) If you stuffed it up, no worries, just unbolt and start over and be patient this time around...

Guest keltik

I had the same problem on my wagon when i bought it. Also fixed the same problem on Mikes wagon (MYGTB). Theres a section in the middle of the garnish thats supposed to let water flow from the rear screen under the garnish and over the number plate. The seal dies and all of the water gets funnelled into your tail lamps and interior.

Remove garnish, wash grit from the foam seal

Apply a small bead of sealant along the top edge

Reinstall

  • 1 month later...

After all the heavy rain we have been having I decided to check and see if our fix was working...its worked 99%

but i noticed today that the left brake bulb in the garnish is blown so I unscrewed it and sure enough there was water in it, not much, in fact compared to what used to be in it b4 the fix this is tiny. but it stil managed to get in there and blow the bulb which is real frustrating ???

wt 2 do???

Did you check the wiring loom rubber? especially the one at the top of the hatch?

Do you have a wing fitted, could be that the seal there is leaking...

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
