2004 Outback

Howsit folks,

The old man's looking for a new car and he's off to check out a 2004 Outback this weekend.

3 litre (EZ30 is it?) with the tippy gearbox. ~65000k's

Anything to look out for on these?

mine goes great - has the ez30R motor.

my 2->3 shift seems a little abrupt sometimes but otherwise not a thing to note

Change the fluid (and make sure you use the right stuff), then get it reset and reprogrammed. They should have a really quick, smooth shift.

mm thinking about it - what does a reset and reprogramme cost? its mostly 2->3 that does it.. the rest are mostly quick and direct

and whats the "right stuff"?

Castrol Transmax J. Dexron III or 95LE causes all sorts of shift issues.

As for cost, no idea sorry. I've got nothing to do with pricing. I just fix them. ;D

it take 5L? or more. Il change it myself - its just the reset and reprogramme i cant do

A drain and refill is about 5 litres. There's a filter tucked behind the battery inside the guard if you feel like changing that too. They're expensive and on there bloody tight!! You need to pull the guard liner back or it will be dripping ATF for ages.

Cos you can't do it.

It needs to be done with the Select Monitor. It clears all the memorised shift points, and then taken out for a relearn.

arrr interesting.. so does it do some learning for peoples driving styles?

To an extent, yes. Basically it's learned some bad data, and under some conditions makes the 2-3 shift harsh.
