WRX vs STI guards

I'm aware that the STI guards have the 'flare' in them, but are they wider where the bumper bolts up?

ie: if I'm going to put a STI front bumper on my non-STI WRX, will I need the guards as well? or could I do that later?

I think if you are trying to put any Sedan front bumper on a wagon you would need the guards also, as a sedan front bumper is slightly wider.
