steering column play -

hey, in my BG5, i have an after market steering wheel, if i pull on the steering wheel it pops out 10-15mm, i have identified that its not the after market steering and the boss kit is fine etc

I know that on some older cars teh steering coloumn used used to calapse if you hit the shaft too hard (built in weak point for crashes etc) ppl do hit the shaft to crack the steering wheel off the spline.

I think someone may have hit it too hard on mine to get the wheel off hense teh shaft play.

Does anyone know how to fix this, or even if i am looking in the right area?

I have checked under the bonnet and i cant see that end bit moving or any thing else moving?

or maybe, is this play normal and there is a spacer missing?

Is the nut that holds the wheel on done up? Take the airbag out, or whatever may be in the way, and check maybe...

yip, steering wheel is tight as, i can see the whole shaft moving. No airbag

as stated i cant see the spline moving where it attaches under the bonet but am now wondering if there is another spline just inside the firewall that may be loose....

well i took the steering column off the BG5 i have for parts to see how it all goes to gether,

and there is no universal inside the firewall

I'd use this steering column but the car has 235kms on it and mine is only 136

Easy enough to get out, but i would kind of like to fix mine if i could.

i kind of looks like the steering column has a wack damaging/triggering the calapse mechanism

can these be reset or fixed?

righto, well i cant see anything obvious, but i do suspect teh steering has callapsed

since i cant see any way to repair it i will get a S/H one.

Next question is... teh key barrel, we all know they are a b1tch as they have no actual head (philips or otherwise) to be able to screw the two bolts out...

if i get another steering column i wanna be able to keep my key barrel, is there a way to just pop the guts of them out to easily interchange them? or do you have to munt the bolts/bracket to get them off

cheers

once you have the column out, use a centre punch, then just fit cap screws to it when you fit it back in.

thanks

geez, there really is no info on callapsable steering aye, i have found in a subaru manual for some american model round the same year to remove the shaft and measure the whole length, if its not with specs ditch and get a new one. so meh??

yeah, its not really something that gives trouble tho....

have you tried giving it a solid whack? to try put it back into place?

maybe you could buy a tack weld if you could see where its moving lol

lol, id say some ball bagus has wacked it enough already when trying to free the wheel off the spline, and the factory callapse safety mechanisum just did its job

yeah man, do it!

k up loading to YT now, can do a vid with wheel and combo meter off aswell but there is nothing to see... the shaft with the steering wheel spline simply moves in and out

the spare shaft i have in the vid has 235kms on it, so not keen to use that as my car has 135kms

mmmm that certainly is moving :) i would guess you are correct in your assumption that it has collapsed :) I use a "ezyout" to remove the bolts that hold the key barrel in :) quick and easy :) and yes use capscrews to replace them with( u can actully buy new bolts if u want the security )

  • 3 months later...

brought a s/h steering column off rosscos in ashvegas

its the two letters on the column that the wreckers use to match up the correct part, mine was CD (for my referance) there are differanet colums for air bag models etc so you do have to get the right one.

Used a dot punch to get the screws in the ignition barrel off, then hack sawed a flat head screw driver slot for ease of re-fitting the srews

Fitted it today and its mint! it now means that the indicators turn off properly too, thank fuk!

Comparing the two columns i cud see that someone must have hit the shaft on the bad one (to get the steering wheel off) prolly causing it to callapse, i cud see the hit marks, where-by the good one from rosscos was shiny & smooth.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
