Starting Issues - Now with Video

Recommended Posts

I've got a 1992 gt Wagon Ej20 single turbo (TD04)

Its got an issue with starting,

What happens:

i turn and the key and it cranks but doesn't fire for a while, will start tho and run fine (can get a video if needed)

When it does fire, it doesn't rev up to 1.5-2k like most normal cars then comes down its kinda coughs into life. and during cold starts it will slowly increase the RPM till warm and then drop back down to normal idle

However after removing the batty last night, connected it up again and it fired up first pop. start a couple more times first pop then goes back normal. I've inspected all coil plugs and changed over the spark plugs, running platinum. (I'm assuming its a computer issue here?)

Anyway of checking / confirming the problem? or maybe something else?

Starter motor?

I was thinking about it but if it was shouldn't it be the same [not starting first time] weather or not i remove the batty?

just another thing i forgot to mention, once car is warm and been driven around a bit the car start first pop as well...

Could be that the starter motor isn't gathering enough power to kick.

What have you done to check the coils?

too true never thought about that, gave the coils to a mate for his old man to test beside they aren't that old, new ones when the engine was transplanted by previous owner.

is there a way i can test weather or not the starter is getting enough power? (don't have a multi-meter on me)

can say thats not normal mate, the 1st test was alot better

Yeah i know that's the problem if it can start nicely the first time then why can't it the rest, i thought it was the spark plugs so replaced them, coils checked and tested fine! so slowly going through a process of elimination, but what next? Fuel , timing, etc

here is something stranger parked the car on the hill facing up outside my place, started first time ???

have you tryed just turning the key to ON and leaving for a bit to build fuel pressure?

as the anti return valve in the pump may be poked

Yeah I've tried leaving it on for a while still no good car still doesn't start well, the fuel pump does make a noise when i switch the key onto the ON position, you can hear it weather that's a good thing or not i'm unsure of

it could possibly have leaky injectors???? try running the car then un plugging fuel pump and letting it run dry then in the morning plug in and start..

wouldn't having leaky injectors make the car run like poo's?, my cars biggest problem is starting after its started runs well, boost fine, everything is normal

wouldnt a leaky seal be noticable as it would basicly pore fuel in?

a leaky seal where? in the injector? the way to test for leaky injectors properly is fit a pressure and flow meter and start car... watch pressure build up then switch off and see how fast pressure drops... if its slow enough it should be fine but if its quick and steady you either have leaky injector or poked non return valve in pump.

Just did what you said, started car then i unplugged the fuel pump, keep going for a second or two then died, will plug back in in the morning to see if it had any effect.

Just received an e-mail from the previous owner about a kill switch but never said what it was connected to, i just checked it and was on the ON position so i don't think it has anything to do with it... however the previous owner was a bit of a tard.

try a new pump>..... an ti return valve is most probably shagged or you could try running an injector cleaner first?

Quick question i have found this fuel pump on TM

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=210748198

would i need to upgrade any other engine bits (eg injectors etc) or could i just replace the pump and all will be fine, i have no idea when it comes to the fuel side of cars, i've never been a bit fan on working on fuel related issues but a pump doesn't look to hard to replace

Just install it and it will run fine without any other upgrades.

Of course if you want to take advantage of the increased flow, then naturally you will need to upgrade injectors etc.

Otherwise it works just like a stock one. You will want the GSS342

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
