BG5 Cambelt change/timing issue?

Hey guys. So, I did my first Subaru cambelt change this afternoon. I removed and replaced waterpump while at it but had a huge trouble keeping the marks on the cam wheels inline and from moving, when i was replacing the offset pulley thing!! The marks were pretty close but not exact.

Does this matter on Subarus?

I started it dry, to test the timing and it sounded a little weird and wanting to cut out though im not 100% sure its not to do with the radiator, being on ramps and everything else i needed to remove to get to the cambelt.

Any suggestions or tips would be awesome!?

It all depends how close pretty close is. There's one or two marks that look like they're half a tooth off but if you go one tooth either way it becomes very noticable that they're not right.

Did you have all the sensors plugged back in?

Yeah sensors were plugged in, i managed to find a cambelt timing diagram...so will give that a go in the morning.

It was probably 1-2 teeth off.

Even 1 tooth is about 7 degrees from memory, so makes quite a difference in cam timing.

Nope, i got a Subaru timing diagram from a mechanics shop to borrow...i can try and scan or take a pic if there are no other links!?

Cambelt was still a b!tch to get back on and timed up properly, but eventualy got it...at least the 12 hours of pissing around with this should make it much much easier the next time i have to do it!

the easy way to keep it on the marks is to use 2x cam gear holders ( little triangle clamps that u put between the gears...tighten them up and the cams cannot move)

dont think theye overly expensive??

Awesome thanks man, i ended up doing something like that with small U clamps...will def look out for some cam gear holders

i usualy put small weges of wood between my cam gears.

whe i did mine i rotated the motor afterwards by hand about 4 times, then made sure all the marks lined back up, that way i didnt have any issues when i started it
