power steering ecu

i have replaced my p/s ecu twice now and the bloody thing went again on me this morning any ideas on y this is happening

Where abouts is the powersteering ecu? i mite look into replacing mine...

my power sterring runs mint on cold mornings for about 1-3 turns of the wheel, then it gets way less helpfull

sometimes gets weaker halfway through a turn, like theres a point where you can feel it kick out then if you come back from that piont it will work abit better again

What happens to your car that you can tell ur p/s ecu is stuffed?

i smelt a burning smell each time and teering light came on it's under the dash above the clutch pedal

well im unsure if that is what it's called but i opend the box up and it's got a circut board inside of it so i firgured that it was an ecu

maybe it does have an ECU, I don't know... but it sounds kind of stupid.

At a guess (if there is a thing such as a power steering ecu) I would say a short of some nature somewhere, maybe moisture ingress, or a wire/connection has lost its insulation...

Could it be a relay cotrol box(???) Hey just throwing ideas about here

Yes some power steer units have electronic control (powersteer ecu)

Normaly fail when R/H inner axle boot is torn and it flaps around and shorts the rack wiring out on the sub frame

Could be anything from a broken wire at the rack or rack fault or ecu (unlikely as they normally work or they dont)

Impossible to diag this over the net sorry, you'll need to take it in for assessment / repair

So if those wires to the power steering are broken Rick, does the polarity matter?

Because mine are totally stuffed.

My XT6 has a cybrid power steering unit. has electric motor running the PS pump.

The CPU actually runs it. so i guess its sorta of a ECU controlled power steering. if you dnt knock the wheel the pump will slow right down. when you start to move it the motor goes to full power. then if you driving at hi speed then the PS tightens up.

Hey man - I would put an inline fuse-holder in place between the ECU and the 12V rail until you find out whats causing the prob. Dunno exactly what the ECU draws (in terms of current, amps/milliamps) but doubt it is that much - that way you'll blow the fuse instead of the ECU if theres a short! ;D
