Good Mechanic in Dunedin

Guest

Recommended Posts

I'm having a few issues with my '96 GT-B, can someone give me the name of a good mechanic that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

It was meant to be 'serviced' a few weeks ago by some guys I'll keep nameless atm, but there still seems to be a few issues that I want to get checked out.

out of intrest, what are the symptoms?

Surging. Almost as if the engine is labouring (in the same rev range), but I'm convinced it's not.

Failure to ignite on occasions.

Possible thermostat issues, it's taking forever to warm up and then is sitting at ~1/4. I've been meaning to put some strain on it and then cruise for a while (like driving up a hill for a while and then rolling back down) to see if the thermostat is changing much, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ridiculous fuel economy that seems to be getting worse. I worked out my last tank to be 18L/100, and I am driving conservatively (shifting below 3k, not driving up to red lights etc.). So for this I'm getting some of the sensors looked at, as well as the spark plugs. Also had a mate mention something about having dirty hotwire AFM's or old vacuum lines, which is way beyond my knowledge, so I'm happy to just hand it over for the time being.

I also don't have the tools to do anything myself at the moment, nor the time. So checking it into Sims is as much for a general assessment as just getting those looked at I guess.

Edit: Why, would you have any guesses as to causes?

OT, but what's involved in a pre-trade certificate? Coming from Australia (and subsequently having no knowledge of NZ trade practices) it seems to be the sort of thing that would be unnecessary in the real world...why not just get a apprenticeship and start learning? What sort of practical experience would a piece of paper from poly give you in your specific field?

this is bang on ... your pre apprentice course does do about 1 quarter of the credits of your apprenticeship so worth doing. and it looks a bit better for an employer if you have done it, shows your keen to learn and not a complete muppet.[quote

good as, best way to do it. just get out there and get some work experience and then hopefully you can get an apprenticeship by the end of the year. out of 14 that passed the course i did last year 5 have apprenticeships in and around dunedin. not great amounts of them out there but if your keen and able you will be sweet.

yeh im looking into a machanics apprentiship now.but its almost impossible because i dont have experinece init.only in the automotive body industry, but i dont wana waste $$ on a course atm,id rather start a apprentiship straight off.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
