understanding power band

i have always been slightly confused with how a power band actually works. what i wanna know is, if you look at a cars specs they will say something like 280bhp@6500rmp. does that mean that all the power is made at 6500 rpm and reving anything above 6500rmp will cause no gain in power?

doesn't mean all the power is made at 6500rpm. it means that the peak power of 280bhp is made at 6500rpm.

A power band would be the definition of the rev range a car makes acceptable power in, which would also in turn dictate desired gear ratios and ideal shift points

for example, a fatter power band might make 200bhp at 4000rpm whilst still making 280bhp at 6500 and drop to 270 @ 7000rpm

a skinnier power band might make 200bhp at 5000rpm 280 at 6500 and drop to 260bhp at 7000

it all depends on turbo size, cams, tuning, etc as to when and where power is made, and of course how much

They usually state peak power. As torque begins to drop faster than the corresponding rate of rise in revs, overall power will decrease from peak.

HP = RPM x TORQUE ÷ 5252

That question takes me back to when i had a motorcycle shop and we used to get young fella's coming in to buy a power band for their xl 185's so they could keep up with their mate's pe175's.

Good question though..Does usually refer to two strokes power delivery.

Power band is a bad name for your torque curve.
