gearbox oil level?

i have a 1997 SF5 forester and trying to check the trans level but from what ive seen i have no dipstick for it. any ideas? its a 5 speed low range manual.

Isn't the dipstick behind / under the top mount Intercooler? I'm assuming yours is not turbo?

It should be on the driverside of the gear box just in front of the firewall. Its quite low down, and just a metal loop.

Use a torch, and you should see it lead down to the side of the gearbox

Yip should still be a yellow loop handle there.

not a thing there guys, had a proper look today, any other way to check the level?

It will be there or there will be a hole where it is supposed to go, have not in 20 years of Subaru ownership/fixing seen one without a dipstick for the gearbox (except for the justy/vivio/Domingo )

could possibly be missing and have a cap over the top of the hole.have seen this on a wrx before.they obviously lost the dipstick and just put a cap over the hold to cover

ill check again, kinda a bit dirty down there so ill get out the waterblaster lol

Have a good look before you waterblast (just incase the dipstick is gone)...

And yes as Firenza said its there, its about halfway between firewall and the block

aha we are all wrong, i have just spoken to someone who knows their stuff and apparently on forester manual low range gear boxes they dont have dipsticks only two bolts, one for topping up and one for emptying. thanks for trying though lol

Well have a look in one of those bolts then. Only way your guna be able to tell roughly what the oil levels like...

Well i think the guy who knows it all better check you oil then

Here is a picture of an AWD Dual range gearbox out of a forester

And you can PLAINLY see the yellow dipstick
