Grease from CV?

I was under the car today and noticed that one front cv joint was a bit oily and there was grease on the diff housing around the bearing.

What issue am I looking at here?

Ooh thats a new one, Looks like gearbox oil emulsified with water to me. Whats the stuff inside the trans look like?

The stuff inside the diff looks and smells fine.

The stuff on the outside definitely feels like grease. Leaking bearing seal thats emulsified you think?

there is a plate/seal in the inside of the CV that if come loose could cause this

unusual problem never seen it me self

I was thinking that - but darrens explanation sound a lot more plausible. Give the boot a gentle squeeze and see if any more shit squirts out.

No grease squirting out, but I can hear air from that end so I guess thats the case.

Is it serviceable or a new CV joint?

u should be able to knock it back in to place

some how it has been displaced my guess would be that it has been pushed into the cv joint by the stub axle out of the diff....

that looks to be inner cv grease. as factory spec the inner cv grease is differentto the outer grease.

i dont know why it would be leaking out though

Why get a new one that is so easily fixed.....

Remove the driveshaft(i guess u know how or do a search as it is covered)

pull inner cv to bits(remove wire circlip from the outer and pull inner out)

CLEAN find the plug that as fallen out and glue back in

add new grease put back together and reinstall

U will find that BNT and such only hold outers in stock at most branches as there is not much call for inners(in over 15 years of subaru ownership and having to service many CVed vehicles I dont recall ever replacing an inner)
