stepper motor gauge vs manual guage

hey guys,

looking at the later stages of my engine rebuilt at the moment, just looking for a guage set, what are your guys thoughts on gauges? stepper or manual?

are going in a rally car so need to take a bit of a beating

Stepper gauges with a good controller are niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

not stressed about noise, if i can hear the gauges over the rally car i got other issues

more about are they acurate/responsive?

Mine's only noisy when it does it's "opening ceremony" thing, can't hear it over the car otherwise (and it probably doesn't move fast enough anyway - oil temp)

If going in a Race car, more so anything with alot of bumps and dust. Go Mech. (or gauges with electronic senders)

Gauges like Defi dont handle the bumps as well. (for road or nice smooth track they great)

Recommend Autometer Pro-comp liquid filled gauges.

Stepper motors are supposed to be more acurate.

That said it would probably depend on the make ie. you get what you pay for.

Autometer gauges are usualy quite well priced and or good quality. Dont get them mixed up with their cheap counterpart though.

I did a Cal test on my Defi gauge and it had a 1% error across its range. May not sound like much, but accurate is class less than 0.1% error.

But you get what you pay for...

Sorry I dont get what you're trying to say there.

I thought defi gauges where alot more expensive than autogauge?

buy from a gauge manufacturer

not a parts warehouse writing their name on chinese stuff to make another buck

brand name mechanical owns cheap stepper in every way

care to explain how you got the 1% error

how you read it and what the 1% was

did it read 99 degrees when something else said it was 100 ?

in which case the difference is like less than half the width of the needle ?

In general yes, you put a given input in the meter and you read what the gauge says.

I did a 10 point Vac/Press and 5 point press only on a few different gauges a fair while back. (using a Beamex MC5 Calibrator)

Both my own Defi and a mates Trust gauges had some error in the readings ( 0.05% is a standard industral max error)

Also some Mechincal Gauges had error straight out of the box.

Also Mechincal gauges start to lose there accuracy after a few cycles.

While you may think 1% or even up to 10% out is no worry, If im paying $300 odd for a Defi gauge I want it to be spot on.
