Subaru Impreza 2000 Cambelt change cost.

My 2000 Subaru Impreza has started making a weird kind of screeching noise for a few seconds when I clutch in to start it then goes away. Runs perfect other than that and is only a recent thing and doesn\'t do it all the time. I have been told it is the cambelt that needs changing?? Its done 188,000km so is due for its next one? How much is this or what else could this noise be?

Could be a loose belt but it would more likely be the aircon or alternator belt rather than the cam belt.

If it still happens after checking / tightening / replacing drive belt/s, when pushing clutch in with motor already running and selecting a gear , its possibly the clutch release bearing or possibly the spigot shaft bearing/bush (part of the clutch assembly too) in flywheel.

Cam belt change interval is every 100K km so yours due in 12K km. I paid $650 for a full belt kit for Outback and fitted it myself .Kit may cost more or less depending on who/where get one from. Its around about $1000 +/- for a garage to do it.

950 it\'s on special at my local garage.

Tauranga. I\'ve also been told it could be the starter motor?

Pays to shop around for cambelt replacement. Here in hamtown prices ranged from $900 to $1300(wingers lol).

TRUE and some don\'t do the water pump or the idlers or the camseals or the tensioner.

Make sure you get a "Proper" job. :)

Does sound clutch related though. Best thing to do?

Get it diagnosed by a Subaru mechanic/Wingers....Then get a Quote for work and the bits n pieces. Negotiate from there with the chosen mechanic.

Bring the info back here an someone may even offer the labour and know how for a reasonable reimbursement of some sort in all probability.
