2000 STI V7 6 spd issues with reverse gear!

Hi all, Have an issue with my cousins STI v7 reverse gear... go and put it into gear and nothing happens.

prior to that problem arising, I was in the car with her at the time and wish i wasn't now, i noticed she didn't use 6th gear on the motorway, so i mentioned it and she thought thats a good idea, so she put into 6th gear but doing so she accidentally tried to put it into reverse and a brief graunching of gears was heard, but went into 6th gear afterwards. The next day she told me that there was no reverse.

I personally haven't inspected it yet, but she taken it in to wingers and they said that gear box needs to be rebuilt etc... from what she said they just jumped into the car and played around with the gear knob and came up with that...

Was still driven around like nothing was wrong with the gbox but exception of No reverse.. ( hate to be stuck behind a broken down car tho )

I am thinking of buying the car of her for a good price, but what I want to know is... has anyone had similar problems with these 6 spd gboxs?

Is it possible to only get the reverse gears and associates parts done without rebuilding the whole thing? The 1st to 6th gear works like New! just no reverse!

Or could it be just linkages? (hope so) Can anyone recommend any good honest gearbox place that could do the repair? (Auckland Area ) I will pull the box out myself and take it in. ( I would do the box myself but don't have the proper tools and plus I'd never rebuilt a gbox before)

I will appreciate any response relation to the problem and I will use the info to diagnose with.

Sounds very much like the issue I had recently.

The reverse lockout lever on the gearbox needs to be in exactly the right pace or 5th 6th and reverse gears will just begin to act wierd, crunching and selecting the wrong one. There is a cable that goes down to the gearbox, very much like a throttle body cable, and it holds a lever in the right place. Sounds like yours needs adjusting.

There is a hole to line up on the lever and the box. You adjust the cable length to get it in the right spot. I used a drill bit to align things while I adjusted the cable

alternatively, your gearbox is farked :)

Hey thanks boostin and Optical, i will check those out in the weekend where car is...

Your right though! if anything else then box is fucked.... since a transmission place told me even if the reverse just needs changing the hole gear system ( front and reverse gears ) needs changing because the old gear system will be superseded by another so parts for this model will be hard to find... an number of transmission place told me this same thing.

thing is though the Graunch wasn't that extreme it wasn't shoved fully into reverse, just goes to show that these 6 spdgear boxes are made out of some type of glass >:(

hey there pappu, yea tried doing that, reving it and puting it into reverse but nothing... if i don't pull that reverse lever up it wont go into reverse ( which is good ) but when I pull the reverse lever up and slot it into reverse, nothing happens ( foot is off the clutch and reving the motor but nothing... I don't even hear any rattling or winding inside the box when its in reverse either ( sort of makes me think that anything is actually not broken)

Unfortunately the car is at my aunties and she has visitors for 2 weeks and can't do any work on it till they gone :( plus its abit cold working on cars this time of the year ;D

      Afternoon team,
      im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket. 
      Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.
