Heat wrap, do you get what you pay for?

As title says, there seems to be quite a variation on the price of heat wrap, is it the more it is the better it works or is there a certain brand to go for? I want to do my 250t headers i bought and possibly the down pipe as well

I bought some of the cheap ceramic white stuff recently (bout $25 for 5m?) and wrapped the headers on my car with it (altezza) to try and shut it up a bit

2 months later and its falling to bits round the bottom, all the stuff which is getting exposed to water I guess? Flakes apart when I touch it. All the top area is fine, and it 100% works for insulating, I can literally put a hand on it after a big drive and it has dampened the noise markedly

Have bought pricey stuff in the past and didnt have the flake apart problem one bit, heat wrapped half an entire exhaust

Thats because it is "glass" tape not Kaowool based.

Only Kaowool and kevlar based heat wraps are any good.

the cheap stuff is a waste of time

will fall to bits in a couple of months . if you touch it it falls to pieces

specially with all the gaskets . bolts / time to do headers and shit properly then you might aswell spend the extra $50 on the stuff that will do the job

thermo tec is good . like actual brand name etc . i used it on my headers and up pipe and and they get a hiding (turbo glowing red) and it hasnt fallen to bits and you can touch it after driving

think it was 95 from jap race , for that i did my manifold and up pipe twice and the sr20 manifold in the jet boat i think . well all those things have it on them now ... ???

Most people recommended the pro sport stuff when I asked including race people. I bought 550deg stuff ages ago when I wrapped my 250T headers in it it took a couple of weeks to go hard and crack apart fluffing up the underbody of my engine/car was a right piss off. Running them unwrapped now but pre sport next time. HPC would be nice tho...

Just bought 50ft of thermo tec stuff of trade me, will see how it goes, hopefully do the trick

Just a by note....If you source this wrap from a reputable insulation company such as Forman or Ideal. You will pay about 50% less for approx 50% more material than repco,supercheap,etc.

Just specify 500C or more. Or ask for either Kevlar or Kaowool based material.

They will also have various widths you can choose from.

I had 500c it didnt take the heat on headers. I would get twice that next time.

Glass rope upper limit is 500C....So specify 500 or more...GEEEZ i said that already.
