Weird Rumbling Noise

ok, so I'm over in the States at the moment, and my father has a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis. 4.6L V8 if I recall right, I had a 1992 model as my first car. its like driving a couch.

ANYWAY- the car intermittently makes a rumbling vibrating noise, lasting less than a second, when driving down the road. similar to the sensation of hitting a rumble strip on the side of the road, and i don't think the speed of the rumble varies with the speed of the car. so at 30 mph it makes the same speed noise as at 70 mph.

any ideas?

as far as i can tell, no. but as i am thinking about it, maybe it doesnt happen at all rpm... it does not happen when off throttle- ie downhill. but on flat or uphill, it does. so maybe at a RPM just a little above idle? i'll try and find out tomorrow, but since it is automatic i can't exactly hold it at different RPM easily.

off throttle points to a diff pinion bearing to me

if u can get some one else to drive and u move about inside the car while it making noise to try and pinpoint it

does NOT happen off throttle. only ON throttle.
