GF8 Clutch slip. New clutch necessary?

Hey all,

First time poster here (garage thread is on the way :P). I have owned a 1999 V5 WRX Wagon for about 4-5 months now. It has always had some issues when the engine got hot, after driving for long periods of time or just going hard, like the gears losing all smoothness when shifting and hearing an audible sound of the gear clomping in on take off, and what sounds like a thumping/banging noise when the wheel is anywhere near full lock, but now I believe the clutch has started slipping. I took it in for a service to the mechanic, and he put some sort of additive into the gearbox oil for what he saw as a possible solution to some of these issues, he did not fully clarify what exactly he put in though.

That night I went for a 80 or so km drive and after 30-40km in heavy Auckland outbound motorway traffic, unsurprisingly it started doing the stuff it normally does when it gets hot, except this time, if I floored it in 4th (and sometimes 5th) when it hit 4k rpm, it would jump to 4500rpm with no real increase in torque. I believe the clutch is slipping, though nowhere near as bad as some I have seen (only jumps about 500rpm). So I just wanted to clarify, does this seem like the clutch slipping? If so is it possible to salvage it instead of replacing the whole thing? If it does need replacing, anyone have any tips on how to go about it? And if anyone has any info on these other problems it would be greatly appreciated.

tl;dr: clutch seems like it is slipping 500rpm at 4k rpm in 4th, is new clutch necessary or is it salvageable?

Thanks :)

Yup most certainly clutch slip, nope cant be repaired, needs to be replaced, look at around the $1k to do properly ( unless you can do it yourself then maybe 5-600)

I would change the gearbox oil to the correct oil, the oil in it is either wrong or old,

Ahh god dammit, I did do the test where you put on the handbrake and let the clutch out in 4th to see if it doesn't stall meaning your clutch is screwed and it did stall when I did it, but I guess the other symptoms are pretty telltale signs. Any recommendations on what sort of clutch I should get?

Car relatively stock? Going to stay that way? OEM STI clutch would be best option

Bit of power? like to give your car a bit of a thrash? I would be looking at exedy HD organic (very street friendly)

Ok sweet as, yeah it is relatively stock, just wanna change the exhaust and eventually the turbo, just don't have that much money to throw around atm so not looking for anything too expensive, preferably around the 500 mark.

In that case I would stick with OEM - it will be more than capable of stepping up to the mark :)

Oh and any idea where I might find one of these OEM STI Clutches? Can only seem to find ones for 04'+ whereas mine is a 99'.

From your local dealer. Just buy the plates genuine and the spigot and release bearings aftermarket from autostop as theyre moonbeams genuine. Part numbers in my garage thread somewhere for genuine plates.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
