Oil leaking in 2001 250T - get thick

Hey guys. I bought a stock standard 2001 NZ new manual 250t but it's got 220,000km on the clock.

It has a oil leak and the mechanic who checked it out said it was at the rear (crankseal?) and est around $800 to fix.

I plan to just keep topping it up and someone said they put a thicker oil in it and their leak ceased.

If you think this is a good idea what could I safely use - 15w-40 or maybe even 20w-50?

Also would gull force10 98 be better choice for it than 95?

You can probably just run it on 91 to be fair

Thicker oil to hide a leak in theory might work, in practise it's a bit shady and just ignoring the issue - sooner or later a small leak always becomes a big leak which becomes a new motor

That said a new motor is only a couple hundy so up to you what makes more sense to do

Found this, might help

"oil separator plate on the rear of the block next to the rear main seal (behind the flywheel / flex plate, depending on the trans.) lots of these were plastic covers from the factory and over time they crack at the screws. if it has not been change this is the leak on the rear near the trans. not an expensive part, but you have to pull the engine to replace it."
