Rear diff ratios etc

Me again, had the B4 up on a hoist today and the mechanic reckons the rear diff and CV's are sh*gg*d. You can move the inner green CV's outwrds quite easily until they can be moved up and down....doesn't seem right to me

Anyway on the brightside, a diff is cheaper and a lot lighter than a gearbox to replace. To help me find a replacement quick, does anyone have one with inner CV's that will fit a B4? It's a 4.44 LSD.

Also to help me search the breakers, can anyone tell me if earler TT RS autos, GT sedans and GT wagons (not GTB) have LSD and are 4.44 because I know where I can get hold of those to pull the diff out.

I suggest you never go back to that mechanic again....

Go get a 2nd opinion from an EXPERIENCED Subaru specialist workshop and you'll will save yourself alot of money.

The CV's on a B4 push into the rear diff and are held in place by a circlip.

It's not hard at all to the get CV to 'pop' out a little and thus have alot of movement in it.

A rear diff and CV's will last well over 300,000km's providing the CV boots don't split and the rear diff oil is changed when due by the service book.

As Mark said, get a second opinion and especially if this bad news came as a surprise to you, I mean, if the mechanic is the only reason you have to suspect you need a new diff.

I gave myself a second opinion. I drained the oil from the diff. Less than 3 months old and the first half that came out was silver, the second half black. Not the nice gold colour that went in. I think that means I have metal soup where the diff should be. Amazingly apart from the loss of drive, there was no noise from the diff at all to indicate imminent catastrophe. :'(
