C.V boot... ANNOYING

Recommended Posts

I have a 1997 wrx sti and the left front c.v boot is torn... We had the wheel and breaks off yesterday but me and two of my mates could not get the axle off for the life of us... is it different in a subaru to other cars because my mate has done them before just not on a wrx

Is there any special things you need to do?

Don't need to take the brakes off.

1) Remove wheel.

2) Undo Hub Nut, 32mm socket and large powerbar/rattlegun required. Possibly an extension on the bar if it hasn't been undone in a while.

3) Undo the bolt that holds the bottom ball joint in place (14mm hex head).

4) Using a pin punch, push out the cotter pin that holds the inner CV joint onto the stub from the gearbox.

5) Now you can lever the balljoint out of the hub, allowing you to swing the hub out and away from the car which lets you pull the inner CV off the gearbox and then the outer out of the hub.

6) To remove the outer CV, you cut the clips off the boot (and usually just cut the boot off) and then the CV needs to be taken off the axle by force, usually by hitting with a rubber mallet (or block of wood and a hammer).

I dislike getting greasy, so every time ive popped a boot on any car - i just buy a whole "new" half-shaft from the wreckers. But usually by the time i get round to changing anything - the joint is full of sand and crud anyways.

Was $50 for a half-shaft for my Civic, and was only $60 a pop for Legacy half-shafts. Gotta warn you to carefully check whatever you buy to make sure its not worn out or about to split. Then the jobs done in 15mins and nobody gets greasy :D

And you can keep the old CV in your shed for that fateful day you decide to go RWD

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
