Help! wrx overheats up hills

My 98 sti goes mean runs sweet no issues just replaced the engine new coolant thermostat waterpump cambelt camseals evrything. except wen it gets to a hill. Heater stops going and temp shoots up in seconds however go down the hill or rev the engine on flat road and heater fires up again and engine cools quickly . Im not loosing water or blowing smoke. Any1 help me?????

Could possible be an airlock in the system? Has the coolant system been bleed when you put the new engine in? are the fans working correctly?

yeah i would have thought its some kind of partial blockage/air lock in the system.

It seems that when the engine is below the radiator etc the fluid is not getting pushed around to cool the system.

Fans work fine they come on as soon as engine temp rises above operating temp. Have tested coolant for exhaust gases and is clean so that rules out headgasket correct? Airlocks are possible but will that make it overheat up hills only?

I had the same problem in my legacy, my bet would be airlock in the system as others have said, other than that it could only be thermostat which you have already replaced....

i have had a BRAND new thermostat stick on me and not open, had to boil the crap out of it and it finally opened, pull it out put it in to boiling water and make sure it does open.

The fans only work at under ~20kph, or when the coolant temp hits 100 deg.

You will have either a monster air lock, or a partially blocked heater core. Try bypassing the heater by looping one of the heater hoses back and see if it still overheats.

Thanks all after tryng heaps to get air out of system had shitloads of bubbles finally appearing in the header tank bubbled for about 3 minutes and problem seems to be solved. Cheers

When you bleed the system did you run the heat on the hostest setting with full fan power?

You don't need to do that as they are constant flow, no matter what the temp setting is.

Put your front up on stands so its raised compared to the rear and try the bleed again with the cap off.

Whats the plan now? yeah sounds like you have been pretty unlucky

Warranty on the engine?
