Auto Trans level

Heya,

so we are selling our b4 and a man came and took it for a drive and told us it had way to much auto trans fluid when we first got the car about 20k ago we had all the fluids changed by oil changes in CHCH

anyways i wanted to ask where is the oil meant to be on the dipstick at cold and where is it meant to be at hot?

The guy seemed to reckon it was wrong and when it was hot it had to be at the full mark? but shouldnt it be higher? like when cold the fluid is at the F on the dipstick?

I cant remeber with the Subarus but on most autos there is a HOT and a COLD scale ( and i think the cold scale is like warm upto a point)

yea this dipstick only has the F and L marks

hey bro i work for oil changers in hamilton, when we service transmissions we fill to half way between the hot and cold marks generally, as the cars we get are not always hot.

if its over take it back to oil changers down there and they will adjust it for you free of charge.

your not having any issues with it shifting are you?

if its not over the full mark when the car is at operating temp then you have no problems.

should always check when its hot if you can.

so when its cold it should be about 1/2way and when hot shoulnt be over the F?

no problems with shifting never had a problem at all twith the gearbox

just checked when it was dead cold and only just on the low side

cool take it for a hard drive to get it up to temp then check it again, make sure the engine is running when your checking the level too.

ideally it should be at the top full mark or close to it, or anywhere above half would be acceptable, but it shouldnt be over that full mark.

this is weird i havnt checked it yet but the guy you test drove it said it was an inch and a half above so wtf? there is no way it could be that high is there? unless he checked it when it had slashed everywhere when driving?

yea sounds weird you will need to check it properly yourself to know for sure, get the car hot, leave the car running and pull the dipstick, clean it off fully with a rag then put the dipstick back in and then check the level, this will give you a good accurate reading.

an inch and a half is quite a lot over.

oh and just to make sure, the guy pulled the transmission dipstick not the front diff dipstick? there is one on each side. cause the front diff only has L and H marks.

diff is drivers side, trans is passengers side.
